Join us for Valuing Ireland’s Teaching and Learning (VIT&L) Week from Monday 8 to Friday 12 November 2021 to share and learn with the Irish higher education community as it considers how we value teaching and learning and explore what the future of education will look like for the students of tomorrow.

VIT&L Week is co-ordinated by the National Forum, in partnership with students and those who teach, lead and support learning across the Irish higher education community. It marks the start of a focus on valuing teaching and learning that will extend to Tuesday 30 November 2021.

VIT&L Week Opening Event | 12.00-13.30 Online event

Chair of the National Forum, Lynn Ramsey will officially open VIT&L Week. The keynote speaker at the launch event is Prof Frank Coton (Senior Vice Principal and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at University of Glasgow and international advisor to the Board of the National Forum. Who will share his thoughts on Why Valuing Teaching and Learning is VITAL.

This opening event will also share an overview of  VIT&L’s month-long programme by Dr Terry Maguire, Director of the National Forum.

This session leads into VIT&L Week’s first Scholarship Hour.

Scholarship Hour No. 1 (First Stage in the Gasta Marathon) | 12.30-13.30 Online event

Chaired by National Forum board member Lewis Purser (Director, Learning & Teaching and Academic Affairs, at the IUA), the first Scholarship Hour will open with National Forum Teaching and Learning Research Fellow, Associate Professor Geraldine O’Neill (UCD), sharing her initial findings from her research into Work-based Assessment: Exploring Barriers and Solutions to an Emerging Assessment Challenge.

This presentation will be followed by the first stage of our Gasta Marathon led by Gasta Master, Dr Tom Farrelly (MTU).  Gasta speakers for the first scholarship hour are:

Ministerial launch of report and findings from the national sectoral partnership project Next Steps: Moving Forward Together | 11.00-12.00 Streaming Online

Simon Harris TD, Ireland’s Minister for Further & Higher Education, Research, Innovation & Science will officially launch the report and findings from the national sectoral partnership project- Next Steps for Teaching and Learning: Moving Forward Together. The overarching aim of the ‘Next Steps’ project was to address the question, in the context of COVID-19, ‘What have we learnt and what does it mean for the future of teaching and learning in Irish higher education?’

The launch will be the centre-piece of VIT&L Week events and activities. This event will share the findings from the project. These findings will be discussed by a panel which includes student, staff, senior management, sector, system and international representatives. This Ministerial launch event will be chaired and presented by Irish print and broadcast journalist Matt Cooper and will be live streamed.

Chaired by National Forum board member, Professor Paul McSweeney (Vice-president for Learning and Teaching at UCC) who will introduce the fifth and final stage of our Gasta Marathon led by Gasta Master, Dr Tom Farrelly (MTU).  The session will also feature our second poster showcase.

The final Scholarship Hour will be followed by the closing session of VIT&L Week where participants will be invited to review the week’s activities through exploring the visual note-taking developed in real-time during each day of VIT&L Week to capture and share ideas discussed and explored by the National Forum and its partners from the Irish higher education sector.

VIT&L Week Closing | 13.30-14.30 Online Event

This session will be opened by Lynn Ramsey, chair of the National Forum board.

Reflection from the Student Assembly
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from the National Forum Student Assembly in a reflection on student perspectives on VIT&L Week.

The Gasta Marathon… some journey!
Gasta Master Dr Tom Farrelly will share his final thoughts on the Gasta marathon in a VIT&L Week where over 26 lightning talks will have been presented to complete the first ever Gasta marathon.

The VIT&L Week Visual Review
Dr Terry Maguire, director of the National Forum, will talk through graphics and images that were captured during each day of VIT&L Week by graphic recorder Esther Bladau. Using Zoom, Esther joined all National Forum-hosted events that took place daily from 8-12 November 2021 and drew the unfolding conversations that took place. The illustrations that emerged as Esther’s response will be shared with participants in a visual review of VIT&L Week.

Closing Remarks
Lynn Ramsey, Chair, National Forum will deliver VIT&L Week closing remarks to the higher education community.
