To mark international Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) in May, UL scheduled a series of events for staff and students to bring accessibility and inclusion centre stage. Emphasising the importance of collaborative approach to accessibility and inclusion, GAAD @ UL is curated by representatives from across the University including the Centre for Educational Assistive Technology, the Centre for Transformative Learning, the Disability Support Service, the Glucksman Library, the Office of Student Life and Marketing & Communications.
Now in its third year, GAAD @ UL welcomed some new additions to the programme in 2025 including a tour of library accessibility features and a visit from Irish Guide Dogs Limerick. Other highlights included staff workshops on accessibility and a guest lecture from educator and independent faculty developer Sarah Silverman PhD on the histories of neurodiversity and UDL. The student voice was highlighted through a student panel discussion on inclusion at UL, and a Dine in the Dark experience offers staff and students an opportunity to reflect on the challenges experienced by colleagues and fellow students with visual impairments by dining together blindfolded. The week-long programme is a testament to UL’s dedication to fostering a culture of inclusion.
