The members of the Board of the Teaching & Learning Forum are selected in order to represent best current thinking in a range of disciplines concerned with excellent teaching and learning, both here in Ireland and internationally.

Mary McAleese

Patron

Mary McAleese was President of Ireland from 1997 – 2011. She graduated in Law from the Queen’s University of Belfast in 1973 and was called to the Northern Ireland Bar in 1974. In 1975, she was appointed Reid Professor of Criminal Law, Criminology and Penology at Trinity College Dublin.

An award-winning teacher, Sarah has researched and published in the areas of organisational behaviour, pedagogical innovation, academic professional development and on a range of topics central to promoting and enhancing teaching and learning in higher education‚

Prof Philip Winn

Interim Director

Philip Winn is Professor of Neuroscience and Head of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. He is a psychology graduate of the University of Hull and spent much of his career at the University of St Andrews, where he was Dean of the Faculty of Science from 2005 to 2007 and Vice-Principal (Learning & Teaching) from 2007 to 2009.

Dr Joseph J.Ryan

Deputy Chair Member

Dr Joseph Ryan is the academic registrar of Athlone Institute of Technology. He is a musician by formation and was the founding chairman of the Forum for Music in Ireland, an inclusive representative voice for music in the country.

Dr Aidan Mulkeen

Board Member

Initially training as a secondary school teacher, Aidan has a with a BA and HDE from University College Dublin, and later studied for an M.Ed. at UCD and a PhD in Education at Dublin University (Trinity College). He has research interests in education policy and particularly teacher policies.

Professor Mark Brown

Board Member

Mark is Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning (NIDL) at Dublin City University (DCU). Before taking up this position in 2014, Mark was Director of the National Centre for Teaching and Learning at Massey University, New Zealand.

Dr Martin Fitzgerald

Board Member

Dr Martin Fitzgerald, a teacher since 1981, has worked in the second level sector as both teacher and school principal and as a teacher and programme leader in third level since 2000.

Dr Iain Mac Labhrainn

Board Member

A graduate of the University of Edinburgh (Astrophysics) Iain completed his PhD at the University of Durham on the topic of Cosmology. He has worked as a Research Fellow, Lecturer and Reader at various universities.

Karena Maguire is Head of Quality Assurance Services in Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) advising the Minister for Education and Skills in relation to national policy on quality assurance and enhancement in further and higher education.

Oisin Hassan

Board Member

Oisín is the Vice President for Academic Affairs with the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), the national organisation representing over 374,000 on both sides of the border. He is a graduate of Queen’s University Belfast in Law with Politics, and has begun an LLM in Law and Governance.
