The ESD team, within the Centre for Academic Practice (CAP), have recently developed an ESD Curriculum Design Framework, that can be used to support the embedding of ESD in the Trinity curriculum. This framework adopts the UNESCO vision of ESD and is represented by the four interconnected quadrants as shown in the visual below. The ESD themes are based on the SDGs and recognise their interdependence in terms of the tiers of the SDGs wedding cake (Rockström and Sukhdev , 2016): Biosphere, Society and Economy. Relevant ESD competencies can be incorporated into the planned learning outcomes of programmes and modules. Finally, teaching, learning and assessments strategies can be enacted to support development of the ESD competencies such that they encompass learner-centred, action-orientated and transformative learning pedagogical approaches.

A set of resources that aim to support staff in using the framework have also been developed. These resources will provide toolkits and examples of how to recognise and incorporate relevant ESD themes, develop appropriate learning outcomes and design teaching, learning and assessments strategies that are known to be effective.
