With support from HEA SATLE funding, Trinity College Dublin is embedding ESD across all curricula, reflecting a commitment to equip all staff and students with the knowledge, skill and values needed to support sustainable development within planetary boundaries.
Led by the Centre for Academic Practice in partnership with Trinity Sustainability, the initiative spans five integrated workstreams encompassing curriculum mapping, professional development, and curriculum (re)design and dissemination.
Key highlights include:
- Interdisciplinary ESD pilot module: Over 500 first-year students and more than 40 staff have participated in our innovative ESD module.
- Curriculum mapping: Postgraduate curriculum mapping is well advanced, with a draft framework under review for publication. All new undergraduate programmes are now required to include at least one ESD-related programme learning outcome.
- Professional development: Recent activities include events during Green Week, participation in the National Forum Spotlight series, and a dedicated ESD strand at Trinity’s upcoming Teaching & Learning Symposium. A growing ESD Resource Hub is supporting academic engagement underpinned by a vibrant Community of Practice.
- Curriculum (re)design: Four “early adopter” Schools are leading the way through supported curriculum design projects. These projects, facilitated by tailored workshops and expert guidance, will inform resource development for 2025–26.
Trinity’s ESD team are also actively engaged beyond the institution: as contributing authors to the LERU ESD report, through active participation in national HEI networks, and engagement in the the SOS Responsible Futures International Pilot Programme.
