Abstract

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), Institute of Technology Sligo (ITS) and Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LyIT) have launched the My Experience RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) Assessment Toolkit. The toolkit includes an information website and an online RPL application tool for candidates looking for access or advanced entry to a higher education programme. In addition, a free open online course has been developed for Higher Education staff seeking professional development in RPL assessment skills and supporting RPL applicants effectively (http://cpd.learnonline.ie/).

Detailed Proposal

In 2014-2015 GMIT, IT Sligo and LyIT launched an online RPL ePortfolio tool built on a Moodle platform and an information website to support and facilitate Irish or international applicants in applying for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The online system enables candidates to gain entry onto a programme or seek exemptions from parts of a programme.

The website www.myexperience.ie defines the different mechanism of RPL assessment, provides details on the process and links to the CUA e-Portfolio tool. The e-Portfolio tool was created in Moodle and provides for assessment of learning.
As a paperless tool, it provides an electronic submission of evidence and allows the learner to submit their portfolio in a sequence of stages resulting in the creation of a professional RPL portfolio. The tool also enables assessors to set challenge exams or special assignments in order to help applicants ‘bridge the gap’ if it arises.

Our proposal for the TEL Week is designed to develop RPL assessor and mentor skills with the e-portfolio Moodle tool across four higher education sites in Ireland. We propose a RPL Skills Development Roadshow that will involve engagement of academic staff across all major disciplines and academic administration affairs departments.

The RPL digital roadshow will reach four Higher Education Institutes. All institutes signed up for the roadshow will be provided with the ePortfolio Moodle Plug-in tool to activate in their own institute

The RPL Roadshow proposed will have a long term impact on HEI’s involved. As the ePortfolio Moodle tool will be shared with the institutes and online RPL discipline community groups will be established, this will all contribute to establishing a solid RPL foundation digital skills culture for the HEI’s involved.
The RPL Roadshow TEL Week proposed includes:
1) RPL ePortfolio Assessment Skills Virtual and Site Visit Workshops – on assessing RPL candidates with the e-portfolio tool and RPL assessment challenge exams and rubric design.
2) RPL ePortfolio Mentoring Skills – Webinar Workshop on Managing the RPL applicant learning journey.
3) International Cases RPL Webinars demonstrating Irish, Scottish and US RPL experiences across a range of
disciplines.
4) Creation of RPL Mentoring and Assessors Online Communities by Discipline.
5) A digital marketing & PR communications campaign.
6) All participants receiving a Digital RPL Skills Badge
