At national level, the National Forum works in partnership with the Higher Education Authority (HEA), Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) and representative bodies (Union of Students in Ireland (USI), Irish Universities Association (IUA), Technological Higher Education Association (THEA), Higher Education Colleges Association (HECA)), to help shape developments in teaching and learning enhancement across the Irish higher education sector. The Forum ensures that national policies and frameworks are rooted in the experiences and expertise of the senior managers, teachers, learners and support staff for whom they are developed.
Recognising that disciplines are a key unit of change in higher education, the National Forum has supported a number of initiatives and projects, in partnership with discipline groups, intended to ensure that developments in teaching and learning enhancement reflect the disciplinary contexts within which teaching and learning takes place.
Building on the extensive collaboration that flourished in Irish higher education prior to the establishment of the National Forum, the Forum has partnered with key teaching and learning networks to ensure that their expertise is harnessed to best effect and to provide opportunities to connect and foster dialogue between those invested in the enhancement of teaching and learning.
The Irish Student Survey of Engagement (ISSE) is a national initiative which aims to ensure students across the country have an opportunity to record and comment upon their experiences of teaching and learning in Irish higher education. Each year, surveys are open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students across higher education institutions and results are analysed, disseminated and acted upon.
The National Forum supports the work of ISSE by sharing findings and facilitating workshops to ensure student responses inform policy and practice at national and institutional levels.
