Creating Connections On and Off Line: Education as a Shared Endeavour

18th November 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The shift to remote teaching in response to the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of the social dimension of education and trained a focus on the notion of presence at both social and pedagogical levels (Garrison, Anderson and Archer, 2001). For learners, making their presence felt in an online environment may be perceived in terms of risk and teachers may struggle to generate satisfactory levels of engagement. In this seminar, David White probes the notion of presence and students’ motivation to engage in both the on and off line environments. He highlights the importance of teachers and learners developing an understanding of education as a shared endeavour and asks us to consider what such a conception might mean in practice in both our own educational contexts and collectively in the higher education sector.

Focus of the event

  • Sharing and valuing ongoing teaching and learning enhancement work
  • Considering how the relational, structural, practical or policy aspects of teaching and learning can be valued, supported and recognised
  • Gathering views and experiences from those who learn, teach and/or lead on the shift to online/remote learning and considering what has been learned for the future about how teaching and learning can/should be valued
