The John Kelly Award for UDL in Further & Higher Education

14th November 2023 @ 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

The John Kelly Award for Universal Design in Further and Higher Education recognises the innovative practice of teaching staff in further and higher education engaging with the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to deliver a more inclusive learning experience for their students. The award aims to celebrate and promote the use of UDL in further education and higher education settings.

The awards are targeted at practitioners who have demonstrated their emergent commitment to UDL by undertaking the Digital Badge for Universal Design in Teaching & Learning and making exciting changes to their practice above and beyond their initial redesign.

After a successful relaunch last year, applications are now open for the Individual award category. To give our institutions and organisations the opportunity to further embed and develop UDL within their contexts, the Collaborative award category will not be running this year but will return in 2024.

The awards are named after the late Professor John Kelly, former Registrar of UCD and founding Chair of AHEAD in recognition of his pioneering work. John sadly passed away last year. We were delighted that he could address the audience in person at the awards final in October 2022.

THE JOHN KELLY AWARDS FINAL 2023; SUSTAINING MOMENTUM IN UNIVERSAL DESIGN IN TERTIARY EDUCATION

In celebration of the John Kelly awards 2023, UCD Access & Lifelong Learning are excited to invite all those interested in universal design in tertiary education across Ireland to our online final event on Tuesday November 14th from 10:00 to 13:15.

The event will provide a platform for the 2023 finalists to present on their implementations of UDL and their plans for the future. Our international panel of experts will be scoring the presentations to identify this year’s winners.

The event will include a keynote presentation from Dr Loui Lord Nelson on Sustaining Momentum in Universal Design, informed by her experiences as the first UDL coordinator for a school district which saw her acting as a point person to support teachers, administrators, and district leaders in their understanding of and implementation of UDL.

Following the keynote presentation there will be a panel discussion between Dr Loui Lord Nelson and former John Kelly Award winners; Dr Maureen Haran, Dr Niamh Plunkett, Dr Anita Byrne, facilitated by Lisa Padden from UCD.
