SUMMARY:Preparing our Students for a Sustainable Future: Launch of the SDG Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:This event sees the launch of UCC’s SDG Toolkit and includes inputs from UCC President\, Professor John O’Halloran\, UCC staff and students as they share their reflections on the need for and experience of integrating the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the curriculum. \nThe SDG toolkit is a web-based resource developed to assist teaching staff to integrate the SDGs into teaching and learning. It includes teaching and learning strategies\, videos\, databases\, case studies and interactive tools. The toolkit also includes mapping tools to help staff realise connections between specific SDGs and their modules\, programmes or research while offering self-reflective exercises to guide further SDG integration. \nThe overarching goal of this SDG Toolkit is to guide students to develop a deep transformative understanding of disciplinary knowledge and values aligned with sustainable development\, so they are enabled with a mindset to become innovative agents of change and to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world in both their professional and personal lives. \nFocus of event: \n\nLaunch of SDG toolkit\n\nRegistration \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ie/e/preparing-our-students-for-a-sustainable-future-launch-of-the-sdg-toolkit-tickets-204049847587?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

SUMMARY:Principles and Practices of Open Research: The PaPOR TRaIL Project and Course
DESCRIPTION:The PaPOR TRaIL project aimed to develop an open education resource (OER) on Open Research for undergraduate and Masters level students. The project involved engaging with students and supervisors to develop the openly accessible PaPOR TRaIL course\, which covers both what open research is and how to do it. PaPOR TRaIL is the first open research OER in Ireland and is designed to be applicable in all disciplines in which research is conducted. \nThis seminar will be led by Dr Karen Matvienko-Sikar\, School of Public Health\, UCC. It will include an overview of the PaPOR TRaIL project and course and panel discussions with students and research supervisors. \nFocus of event: \n\nOverview of the PaPOR TRaIL Open Education Resources (OER)\n\nRegistration \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ie/e/vital-week-principles-and-practices-of-open-research-tickets-200949313807?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

SUMMARY:VP for Learning and Teaching to open Vital Week in UCC. Dr Catherine Mahony launches the Civic Engagement Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:CIRTL supports staff and students who are engaged in teaching and demonstrates academic leadership in the scholarship of teaching and learning. In UCC that academic leadership includes an ambition for further embedding civic and community engagement in the curriculum. Read more about the benefits\, rationale and policy imperative in the Why Get Engaged section. \nThe toolkit has been devised to support all staff who teach in UCC who wish to integrate civic engagement into their teaching. Staff have requested opportunities to exchange knowledge\, to hear from their peers\, learn what’s worked well elsewhere\, to be inspired. That is why this toolkit is centred around Practice Insights articles with practical examples and tools to support implementation from peers and colleagues in the University\, nationally and internationally. This toolkit can be used to enhance professional practice in community-engaged teaching and learning and uncovers the variety of learning activities and methodologies that are available for use in teaching. \nFocus of event: \n\nLaunch VITAL week\nLaunch Civic Engagement Toolkit\n\nRegistration \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ie/e/vital-week-ucc-opening-and-launch-of-the-civic-engagement-toolkit-tickets-203121781717?aff=ebdsoporgprofile

SUMMARY:Learning Connections 2019: Spaces\, People\, Practice
DESCRIPTION:The Learning Connections Conference will take place in University College Cork on 6 December 2019. This conference will bring together learners\, teachers\, architects\, designers and all who support teaching\, from across third level institutions: from universities; institutes of technology; community; industry; government agencies; policy makers; and regulators\, under the frame of learning connections. The conference is underpinned by the following research questions: \n\nHow can we connect across disciplinary boundaries\, and break down barriers between academia\, administration\, community and industry to strive for optimal student learning in Third Level Institutions?\nHow can learning in different spaces – physical\, active\, virtual\, off campus\, enable all students\, as global citizens\, to think through and solve big problems?\n\nOver the two days\, delegates will examine the science of pedagogy as it interacts with architecture to enhance student learning and enable student success. Thinking through these ideas will involve participation and interaction from educators\, researchers\, students\, architects\, engineers\, community partners\, industry leaders and others. There will be an opportunity to explore the learning environments of the future\, both physical and digital\, and to explore the complex relationship between space and learning. \nThe National Forum is delighted to sponsor of this event. \nFor more information\, see here.
