DESCRIPTION:Dr Eithne Hunt hosts the Brainpower showcase and launch of the Brainpower digital badge. \nBookended by puberty and culturally defined adult roles\, scientists and researchers now agree that adolescence extends from age 10-24 years. To realise student success\, higher education institutions must take into account that the majority of their undergraduate students are still adolescents\, without fully developed cognitive\, social\, emotional and self-regulatory capacities\, living and learning in a socio-cultural environment that offers less external regulation than ever before. Created by a team of academics and scientists from occupational science and occupational therapy\, applied psychology and neuroscience\, with contributions from students and higher education staff\, Brainpower is a free\, online\, self-paced course\, focusing on harnessing the power and potential of adolescent brain and behaviour for enhanced learning\, wellbeing and student success in higher education. \nAlthough targeted mainly at academic and academic support staff in higher education\, Brainpower is likely to be of interest to staff across further and higher education\, nationally and internationally\, as well as parents\, school teachers\, coaches and all those who contribute to the lives of young people. It is publicly available to all under Creative Commons License via Canvas Public. DESCRIPTION:This event sees the launch of UCC’s SDG Toolkit and includes inputs from UCC President\, Professor John O’Halloran\, UCC staff and students as they share their reflections on the need for and experience of integrating the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the curriculum. \nThe SDG toolkit is a web-based resource developed to assist teaching staff to integrate the SDGs into teaching and learning. DESCRIPTION:Despite the socio-legal changes that have signalled greater acceptance of sexual diversity and gender expansive identities in the 21st century\, worldwide studies highlight the enduring targeting of those with a sexual and/or gender minority status. Even with the constitutional and legislative changes since 2015 (marriage equality and gender recognition)\, LGBT+ youth face a myriad of social\, familial\, community\, educational and healthcare challenges in Ireland. SUMMARY:Principles and Practices of Open Research: The PaPOR TRaIL Project and Course
DESCRIPTION:The PaPOR TRaIL project aimed to develop an open education resource (OER) on Open Research for undergraduate and Masters level students. The project involved engaging with students and supervisors to develop the openly accessible PaPOR TRaIL course\, which covers both what open research is and how to do it. PaPOR TRaIL is the first open research OER in Ireland and is designed to be applicable in all disciplines in which research is conducted. \nThis seminar will be led by Dr Karen Matvienko-Sikar\, School of Public Health\, UCC. The conference is underpinned by the following research questions: \n\nHow can we connect across disciplinary boundaries\, and break down barriers between academia\, administration\, community and industry to strive for optimal student learning in Third Level Institutions?\nHow can learning in different spaces – physical\, active\, virtual\, off campus\, enable all students\, as global citizens\, to think through and solve big problems?\n\nOver the two days\, delegates will examine the science of pedagogy as it interacts with architecture to enhance student learning and enable student success.
