Date: May 30th
Time: 13:30 – 16:30
Venue: Room M128, Muirhevna Building, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dundalk.
Presenter: Professor Kris Spellman Miller
Event Details:
The ability of students to successfully transition in their writing is fundamental for their learning and progression through Higher Education (HE). The proposed seminar provides a forum for educators to explore the transitions that students navigate when writing in academic contexts. Students encounter many transitions as they adjust to new stages of their academic career: from school to HE, between different stages of their programmes, from work to education, between languages or across genres or disciplines. Specific challenges include linguistic and cognitive ones, such as composition process and text production, and personal and social ones, including the development of an academic identity.
The proposed seminar will be delivered by Professor Kris Spellman Miller and will draw on her expertise in both teaching and learning and language learning and use. She will identify key points of transition and their impact on writing, with particular focus on writing strategies and experiences, drawing attention to the implications for student support. The second part of the seminar will focus on specific strategies for supporting student writing across key transitions. This will be interactive: activities and discussions will enable participants to identify ways to apply these to meet challenges in their own practice and to share experiences.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the day, participants should expect to be able to:
- Identify key educational, personal and social transitions faced by their own students in their writing.
- Consider the challenges posed by these transitions in terms of both the process and experience of writing.
- Reflect on their own practice in terms of supporting student writing.
- Identify at least one strategy to implement in their own practice.
