Professor Liz Thomas is an independent researcher and consultant for higher education and Professor of Higher Education at Edge Hill University. She is visiting professor of Academic Development at Staffordshire University.
Liz has over fifteen years’ experience of undertaking and managing research about widening participation, student retention and success and institutional approaches to improving the student experience. She is committed to using research to inform national and institutional policy, practice and evaluation, and has developed and led change programmes to facilitate this.

Event Details:

This workshop will address:

(i) the transition from secondary school to engineering education

(ii) the transition from engineering education to engineering practice from a teaching and learning perspective.

Included in the workshop will be an example of how first year electronic engineering students’ engagement in a peer learning environment enhanced their technical and social learning skills.

An expert will present how peer learning can enhance students’ third level education and ultimately prepare students for the social and technical complexities of engineering practice.

There will be an opportunity for educators to discuss the implementation and evaluation of novel learning techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

Having attended the workshop, attendees will be able to

  1. Discuss the value of using the ‘student voice’ in learning to learn modules
  2. Identify challenges faced by students in their first year at third level
  3. Create value and relevance for students in learning to learn modules
