Event Details:
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) creates inclusive pedagogy by encouraging a curriculum design tailored to address the needs of all students. By acknowledging that there is no average, UDL focuses on the needs of the individual and supports students through the variety of transitions that define their experience of higher education. UDL acknowledges the diversity in experience, culture and personality among students and provides the teacher with the tools to reach out to all students in the classroom.
The seminar begins with an introduction to the concept of Universal Design as defined by its architectural, environmental and product design origins. It will then focus on the nature of UDL as defined by work of Rose and Meyer at the Centre for Applied Special Technology (CAST) at Wakefield, Massachusetts. The CAST principles and guidelines will then be explored, defining how these inform an inclusive and engaging curriculum. In making pedagogy explicit, UDL will be aligned with Multiple Intelligences (MI) and Teaching for Understanding (TfU) approaches, to maximise student learning. The discursive phase of the seminar invites teachers taking the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education to share their experiences of designing curricula, using UDL, MI and TfU principles.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the principles and guidelines of Universal Design for Learning
- Recognise the failures and successes of actions taken to create Universal Design for Learning
- Discuss key issues around inclusivity and UDL
- Apply the principles and guidelines of UDL to course curriculum based on Teaching For Understanding principles.
- Evaluate the benefits of UDL interventions over time.
