Event Details:

Universal design for learning (UDL) is a methodology that seeks to promote learning among all students by removing the barriers raised by rigid curricula which inadvertently exclude those with different abilities and backgrounds. It is based on the principle of providing all learners with non-discriminatory and equitable opportunities to learn. While learners with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of those barriers other groups such as non-native speakers, culturally diverse students and those with socio-economic and personal issues also can be disadvantaged in an inflexible learning environment.

This proposal addresses the enhancement of learning and teaching and focuses in particular on the utilisation and implementation of strategies which will ameliorate the student experience with regard to providing multiple means of representation, action, expression and engagement. The seminar will also include examples of inclusive means of assessment as well as examining the role of technology in facilitating the flexible environment.

Key Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop/seminar:

  1. Apply universal design principles to their practice.
  2. Identify the barriers to inclusiveness in learning posed by a rigid curriculum.
  3. Evaluate and apply inclusive strategies within their learning, teaching and assessment practice.
  4. Articulate ways to develop inclusive assessment practice within their discipline area.
