Event Details:
CASTeL are hosting a symposium in DCU on Thinking Science across the Transitions particularly focusing on the cognitive development of students. CASE (Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education) is a student-centred teaching methodology that focuses on the development of key skills that are necessary for science understanding and schema such as classification, proportionality and reasoning. It also focuses on developing thinking skills and in particular specific aspects of metacognition. The development of these key skills is critically important in science and should be continuously addressed across all levels of school and university.
This symposium will involve a series of presentations and discussion sessions to enable the dissemination of international research and will provide a platform for early-stage researchers to communicate their research findings to an audience of researchers and teachers.
This symposium is open to all those interested in the teaching and learning of science, particularly those teaching at first year university level and involved in science teacher education. Teachers will also be invited thus providing a platform for these groups to discuss the multifaceted nature of the teaching and learning of science, particularly the issues experienced at the transition between secondary school and university and the challenges that students face.
Learning Objectives:
Following this seminar, participants will be able to:
- Identify and appraise key objectives for science teaching that are applicable at different educational levels;
- Appreciate and understand the progression in scientific skills and thinking in students, appropriate for various levels of their education;
- Inform the STEM education review group of the outcomes of the presentations and discussions arising from this symposium their impact;
