Event Details:
This seminar aims to explore access/widening participation under the theme of ‘Teaching for Transitions’ by highlighting the relevance and effectiveness of transitionary programmes. It will also showcase how the teaching and learning environment of such initiatives promote not only access but progression and retention in higher education. In addition, it will look at the potentially polarising role of technology in accelerating access and opportunities for some who are familiar with it (so called ‘digital natives’) while simultaneously posing a barrier for those who are not equipped for using new technology.
This seminar will bring together faculty, access practitioners and researchers to share the evidence base from their practice and research and to show how they are addressing and exploring the challenge of transition to tertiary education in the context of widening participation.
This seminar will be structured under three thematic headings:
Theme 1 – Access and creative pedagogies
Theme 2 – Access and learning technologies
Theme 3 – Access, Equality and Quality
Learning Outcomes
- Address the transitionary needs of the access cohort in the context of the rapidly changing higher education environment;
- Share and identify best practice in the area of access and teaching and learning;
- Provide an opportunity for peer learning within the community of practice (of those working in the field of access, from as many perspectives as possible);
- Draw from the international literature to showcase, apply, compare and contrast the evidence base around access/widening participation in an Irish context.
