This workshop is set against the rapid growth of new models of online and distance learning in the digital world. It considers the “new normal” of distance learning in the context of growing concerns internationally about the retention and completion of first-time online learners. More specifically the workshop builds on contemporary literature relating to student engagement and a recent study of first-time distance learners to address the particular challenges facing

mature, diverse and geographically dispersed learners in their transition to higher education. A conceptual framework is then introduced to help participants design and develop a coherent strategy for student success across the study lifecycle. Several examples of targeted supports and interventions for first-time distance and online learners are reviewed, and the workshop concludes by discussing how to implement an institutional wide strategy for student success.

The workshop will provide a valuable forum for sharing and reflecting on effective practice across the sector. It will engage participants in active researched-informed learning as they compare and contrast their own experiences against international benchmarks.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the range of ‘soft factors’ that influence student success and engagement.
  2. Recognise and respond to many of the challenges facing first-time distance and online learners in the new digital world.
  3. Discuss key principles and identify crucial phases that influence distance and online learner success across the study life cycle.
  4. Design and develop a range of strategies and interventions drawing on a conceptual framework to enhance the success of first-time distance and online learners.
