Presenter(s): Dr. Lisa Ganobcsik-Williams, Head of the Centre for Academic Writing, Coventry University

Event Details:

The workshop is concerned with the transition to writing in higher education, which we see more accurately as a point along a continuum rather that a step or bridge from one place to the next. Equipping students with essential generic foundation skills such as writing is essential in ensuring a high-quality student experience (Hunt Report, 2011: 11), in addition to satisfying one of industry’s most desirable attributes in employees (Archer and Davidson, 2008; Hinchliffe and Jolle, 2011).

This event is aimed at academics who want to teach discipline-specific writing to their students and at writing developers whose role it is to provide practical support to academics in engaging with writing pedagogies. The session will open with an introductory talk by the facilitator, Dr. Lisa Ganobcsik-Williams, Head of the Centre for Academic Writing, Coventry University, on building ‘whole institution’ provision for academic writing development and on key principles of teaching writing. The talk will be followed by a workshop in which academics and writing developers will work together to formulate practical strategies for teaching and supporting writing in the disciplines.
