Event Details:

As part of ITT Dublin International Week and the ITT International Social Media Research Forum, this seminar will discuss how social media can benefit the first-year learning experience by engaging the students in media that most are very familiar with. The presentation and seminar will discuss how social media can assist post-primary students make a smooth transition from post-primary school to third-level, and also how social media can be of enormous benefit to mature students who are returning to education (many through back-to-education/Springboard initiatives). It will discuss the potential benefits of pre-enrolment social networking for aspiring students, as a means to reduce the uncertainty and fears that can occur during such transitions to higher-education. This is expected to improve retention and student satisfaction, and may be needed as early as 10 months before enrolment (circa CAO application time). The seminar will also look at social media both as a social and a collaborative learning tool, with a particular focus on how the use of “Live-Tweeting” in the classroom can engage students and serve as a revision aide, as well as developing a student’s generic skills such as listening and attention, class participation, summarising, multi-tasking and ICT-development.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Demonstration of the relevance of Social Media in third-level education;
  2. Discussion of best approaches to managing Social Media in the classroom;
  3. Agreement on methods to utilise Social Media to help prepare students for third-level (pre-CAO/course offer phase);
  4. Understanding of which Social Media tools are best for First Year students in particular;
  5. Demonstration of Organisation and Benefits of Live-Tweeting in the classroom.
