Date: June 5th
Time: 10:00 – 16:00
Venue: UCC
Presenter(s): Dr Anne Rath
Event Details:
A group of Social Work educators are currently engaged in researching some of the tools of reflective inquiry / learning that they are using on professional social work programs. One such tool is the ‘critical learning incident‚ that is completed by students and practice teachers, as part of a students practice learning portfolio, while on placement. We are considering ways of systematically examining and researching the ‘critical learning incident. One suggestion is to examine exemplars of learning incidents with students and practice teachers and to inquire into the following questions. What contribution does the learning incident make to encouraging the integration of theory and practice on placement? How is the learning incident best used on placement? What are the challenges presented to the practice teacher on placement in using the Learning incident as a learning tool? What are the challenges presented to the student on placement in using
the Learning incident? What are the challenges presented to assessors of the learning incident?
We plan to have a seminar when we will open up for discussion the questions cited above. Finances permitting, we would hope to invite a distinguished speaker in the field of professional education to open the seminar with a formal presentation on reflective inquiry in professional education. We will invite graduates of the Master of Social Work Programme, Social Work Practice Teachers and educators to participate in the seminar.
Learning Objectives:
To inquire further into the learning outcomes of the ‘critical learning incident’ for all involved practice teachers, graduates and educators.
To explore possible assessment rubrics for the ‘critical learning incident.
To develop a reflective forum for social work educators.
To review and revise the form and structure of the current critical learning incident’
