Date: March 27th
Time: TBC
Venue: Room 1041, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Dublin Road, Galway
Presenter(s): Mr. Michael Hannon, Registrar, GMIT
Event Details:
GMIT offers a “Learning to Learn (L2L)” module as a mandatory module in the first year of its undergraduate programmes. The module was designed to help students develop the learning skills needed to meet the demands of third-level study and to ease their transition from second to third level. Lecturers have freedom in how this module is delivered to maximise its impact for different programmes. A unique feature of the module is that the delivery can be contextualised to different discipline areas while still achieving a generic set of learning outcomes.
The module has been running for a number of years now and a review of the module is being undertaken The review will evaluate all aspects of the module in an effort to gauge its success in achieving its objective in supporting students in transition. It will also attempt to measure the impact of the module on the academic performance of our students, specifically as an aid to retention. The review will also consider the appropriateness of the module learning outcomes and indicative syllabus content.
As this module is mandatory, and given its importance in supporting students transitioning to third level, it is important to host a seminar to disseminate the findings of the review.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the seminar, participants will:
1. Understand the critical significance of the L2L module as a key component of the GMIT First Year Student Experience.
2. Be provided with an opportunity to interrogate the findings of the review.
3. Be given an opportunity to endorse any recommendations prior to the revised module being accredited by Academic Council.
4. Understand the impact that the module has had on students’ academic performance, specifically as an aid to improving retention.
