Event Details:
The aim of this workshop is support the development and enhancement of supervisory skills for academic staff engaged in the supervision of postgraduate research students. The workshop is offered to all staff employed in Higher Education in Ireland who have, or will have, a supervisory role in relation to postgraduate research students.
This workshop will focus on some of the key themes identified by a NAIRTL Working group who developed a framework curriculum for supporting research supervisors. Using reflective exercises and a peer-learning approach, workshop participants will engage in discussions and explore case studies focussed on common issues faced by supervisors such as “Fostering student independence and supervision styles”, “The modern doctorate and changing role of the Supervisor”, and “Supervisors’ roles and responsibilities”.
This workshop is first of a two part workshop format that addresses the key issues that may be experienced by a supervisor as they support a student going through the PhD lifecycle from initial recruitment to the final exam.
Learning Outcomes:
- Outline the policy issues nationally and internationally that inform local supervision guidelines
- Be equipped with planning and project management approaches to facilitate their supervision of students
- Appreciate the challenges, problems and pitfalls that can accompany the various stages of supervision and have developed potential approaches to manage them
- Advise and assist students on structuring and managing the work associated with the later phases of a research project, including completing data collection or experimentation and commencing write-up
- Support students in identifying their training needs and the dissemination of their research through publication and conference presentations (where appropriate)
