Event Details:
ITB wishes to explore the possibility of integrating designing thinking into the third level curriculum. Academics often rely on assessments which consist of pseudo or non-real world problems which while providing a challenge to the student, often fail to motivate them. Design thinking promotes the identification of real world problems and the development of innovative user centric design solutions to combat those problems.
As a design methodology, design thinking can be applied to many problems requiring a design solution. It allows academics and students to engage in hands-on design challenges that focus on developing empathy, promoting a bias toward action, encouraging ideation, developing metacognitive awareness and fostering active problem solving. Its successful use in Stanford and other institutions has resulted in an increase in true student led learning and an increase in the levels of meaningful formative assessment.
Led by NoTosh consultants (http://notosh.com/) the workshop will bring academics through a one day design thinking process, concluding with a study of benefits and ways to adopt it into the curriculum. The workshop will also examine methods for ideation, problem identification and description and methods of facilitating students engaged in design thinking projects.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the benefits and uses for design thinking
- Learn about the key phases of design thinking and how they can map to assessment and learning
- Develop techniques for ideation and problem solving
- Understand the benefits of rapid prototyping
