Event Details:
This seminar will disseminate experience implementing a new first year module on BSc Computing degree programme. Traditionally this programme experienced very low retention and poor progression. The aim of this module was to redress this by assisting the learner in the transition to third level education by providing them with the necessary academic support and development skills. The module seeks to help learners develop adaptable competences that support them throughout their learning journey. In addition it aims to equip learners to optimise their learning experience in College, and provide them with personal and professional lifelong skills and competences.
The learner profile on the ELD module is a combination of international learners transitioning from different cultures; domestic learners transitioning from second level education; and mature learners transitioning from a host of different life experiences. The first three-day workshop, which is in week one of the semester, is focused on offering learners’ exposure to each other’s experiences, and opportunities to explore different models of education, frames of reference, and sets of expectations to higher education in Ireland, and Griffith College, that exist among them. This exploratory learning scenario is used as the basis for providing subsequent weekly half-day seminars/workshops that run across the first semester.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this seminar participants will be able to:
1. Integrate a module into their programme which will enhance learners transition into first year
2. Practically see how a team-based pedagogical approach can be structured, managed and monitored
3. Apply a mentoring process to any aspect of their pedagogy
4. Design a mentoring handbook to suit their mentoring requirements
5. Use ePortfolio as an assessment tool
