Event Details: ‘Hands On: Feel the Music’ is a collaborative project that is currently taking place between the Department of Music UCC and Disability Services UCC to increase the accessibility of Music to blind and visually-impaired students wanting to pursue music at third-level. Currently there lacks a seamless transition for blind and visually impaired students engaging in music at second level to progress to studying this subject within a third-level academic environment; this in turn, has affected the number of visually impaired student registering for music degrees. With presentations from both national and international experts the need for a consistent literacy model for teaching music to visually-impaired students will be addressed. This will also coincide with the launch of the Hands On: Feel the Music handbook, a supportive document devised to assist music teachers and lecturers at second and third levels. This event aims to bring educators together to ensure a clear progression pathway from second to third level education for students that have a visual-impairment and want to specialise in music.

Learning Objectives:

1. An understanding of existing provisions of music education for blind and visually impaired student both within a national and international context.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of a literacy model that embraces aural and academic methods when teaching music to second level students that want to progress to third level.
3. Know the basics of the Braille Music code.
4. Through engagement with practical demonstrations by leading experts to be able to use transformative technology to create and access Braille Music scores.
