The aim of this seminar is to give an account of the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) Transition Year Work Experience Programme and to highlight its achievement in enhancing the transition from second level to third level. The seminar will facilitate the sharing of this practice with other institutions whilst raising awareness of the programme for career guidance teachers and students. The BEES work experience programme was piloted in 2012 and due to student demand it is now embedded in the School academic year. It aims to deliver a comprehensive experience of working in the area of Zoology, Ecology, Geology, Plant Science and Environmental Science through a series of lectures, practicals and discussion groups. Not only does the programme provide an insight into working in these subject areas but it is also designed to help manage and guide the student’s expectations of third level. This seminar will reflect on the effectiveness of the transition programme using student feedback carried out since its inception. A visual display of a portable aquaponics unit, designed and developed specifically as an integrative tool for exploring all of the sciences for transitioning students, will be demonstrated.
Learning Outcomes:
- Appraise the structure of the work experience programme
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the programme in guiding the student’s expectations of third level
- Understand the design of an aquaponics unit and its use as an integrative teaching tool for the natural sciences
