Event Details:
Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) evolved from Problem Based Learning and describes a pedagogical approach whereby the learner acquires knowledge and skills through enquiry rather than direct instruction. The underlying educational philosophy of EBL is of one that recognizes and acknowledges the student as the focus of the process (Barrows, 1996). It is based on educational model that is aimed at developing analytical and critical thought, co-operative and self-directed learning and the integration of knowledge and skills (Rowan, McCourt and Beake, 2009).
EBL represents a transformative approach to learning where students become the chief drivers of their knowledge and skill acquisition which then has the potential to enhance their development of key lifelong learning competencies.
It has been well recognised that the transition from college based theoretical instruction to practical/clinical based application of knowledge and skills poses a significant challenge within healthcare education (McCaugherty, 1991; Rolfe, 1993, 1996, 1998; Thomas and McCourt, 2001; Begley, 2001; Phipps, 2003; Wilson, 2008). Due to its emphasis on authentic learning and assessment opportunities, Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) holds real potential with regard to ameliorating this cognitive, affective and psychomotor transition (Barrows 1979).
EBL is suitable for discipline specific and cross discipline learning and can also be used within innovative learning technologies e.g. blended learning (McVane Phipps, 2010).
Learning Outcomes:
Participants on this workshop will:
1. Develop an understanding of Enquiry Based Learning as an innovative pedagogy within Health Science Education.
2. Experience the processes involved in an EBL approach to learning and teaching through participating in an EBL tutorial.
3. Consider how an EBL approach to learning and teaching can be applied to their own educational practice.
4. Acquire support and advice in the practicalities of facilitating an EBL approach to learning and teaching.
