Time: 10:30 – 13:00
Venue: Waterford Institute of Technology, Cork Road Campus, Waterford
Presenter(s):

-Maeve O’Grady
Event Details:
This workshop describes a structured approach used for a group of FE teachers who had craft qualifications but no NFQ certification to gain advanced standing onto a BA (Ordinary) Level 7 award. The programme was designed to help participants recognise and gain credit for their prior learning (both certified and experiential) and from that base, prepare for third-level study. The programme addressed three key needs:
1. Understanding of and preparation for undergraduate third-level study.
2. Identifying existing study skills and acquiring new ones.
3. Starting, with confidence, at the most appropriate level of study.
Seminar participants will have the opportunity to examine the programme and identify any issues or constraints in its application. It will be of particular interest to institutions seeking a vehicle for enabling groups of adults in the workplace seeking to respond to their need to identify their most appropriate level of study, and provide the skills they need to succeed.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between different models of recognition of prior learning and have considered the role of the development model in enabling transitions into higher education.
- Have considered the programme’s connection with workplace mentoring and peer support.
- Be aware of the theoretical foundations of the approach and sources of further information.
- Have considered the skills, knowledge and attributes required by the lecturer to feel confident in using the programme.
