From Dissertation to Publication is a practical workshop designed to enhance practitioners contribution to teaching and learning in higher education through extending the dissemination of research undertaken in Diplomas and Masters in Teaching and Learning, encouraging colleagues to consider publishing their teaching related research as well as their discipline based work.

This event is framed in the context of the professionalization of teaching and learning through accredited programmes that has evolved in higher education in Ireland, particularly over the past 15 years. A key element of the many postgraduate courses in teaching and learning is the completion of a dissertation and/or an action research project. This work is frequently practice-based and provides for a valuable blend of research-enabled learning. At present, much of the excellent work completed for these courses, which has great potential as contributing element to the national scholarship in teaching and learning in HE, remains unpublished.

Drawing on contemporary research in writing transfer, the workshop will assist participants to consider ways in which they can re-purpose their research for a new and distinct audience through a defined publication strategy.

Learning Outcomes:

By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will

1. understand the difference between writing for a dissertation and writing for publication including key concepts of audience, purpose, genre and stance.

2. have identified sections of their dissertation that would make suitable copy for an academic article or book chapter, and sections more suited to other forms of dissemination

3. have considered which journals or publishers would be appropriate for their work

4. have prepared an outline plan for the completion of the first publication from their dissertation

5. have experience of using a publication submission system from a journal using AISHE J as a live example.
