Presenter:¬†O’Neill, G., Galvin, √Å., Cashman, D.

Event Details:The seminar will address the Teaching for Transition theme with particular emphasis on transitions; from second to third level learning and from face-to face to a blended teaching and learning approach.

Drawing on a strategic evidence-based project at UCD, which facilitated the redesign the student learning experience in large classes through use of a blend of online and face-to-face approaches, this seminar will:

• Present the major themes emerging from international case-studies on blended learning in large classes, such as: the flipped classroom; specified learning tasks before, during and after class; efficiency of staff and students’ time; student learning from one another; online formative assessment & feedback; creation & sharing of student generated materials; use of peer-tutors.

• Present a brief overview of the UCD Blended Learning project (n=7 modules)

• Engage participants in models of blended learning design used in this project and elsewhere, http://www.ucd.ie/teaching/resources/e-learning/planyourdesign/

• Debate and critique the variety of innovative teaching and assessment approaches used (e.g. flipped classroom) and draw on participants own experiences in this area.

• Highlight progress to date based on the ongoing research into the UCD project.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this seminar participants should be able to:

1. Consider a range of blended learning options (methods) for use in large classes;

2. Critique the effectiveness and efficiency of these options for their own teaching context;

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the application of models of blended learning design for use in a variety of undergraduate and graduate contexts;

4. Aware of potential research questions and methodologies in this area.
