SUMMARY:That is the Future for the Assessment of Learning through Final Examinations? Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, alternatives to assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Friday 28 May. \nFor some time\, research analysing assessment in higher education has raised questions about the effectiveness and reliability of traditional final exam-based assessment. The closure of campuses in light of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to immediate changes in formative and summative assessment practices in higher education in Ireland\, with the cancellation of on-campus exams. Alternative assessment modes\, most of which were online\, were developed within a matter of weeks. This represented a sudden and critical challenge across the sector\, but it has also opened the opportunity for us collectively to revisit the rationale for\, and purposes of\, final exam-based assessment in our programmes. \nBuilding on the Part 1 on 06 May\, in this webinar we continue a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. In this webinar\, we share a range of examples showcasing alternative assessments to exams. We will explore the theme of assessment for engagement\, and hear perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers and other stakeholders. We will consider the implications of continuing with final exams\, and in particular online exams which require proctoring. The issues arising from the use of online proctoring will be identified and discussed\, with experiences shared by staff and students who have experienced this mode of assessment. We consider assessment from the perspective of care\, and how the educational landscape post-Covid -19 can effectively address some of the negative experiences of assessment online and offline. The conversations from Part 1 and Part 2 will inform a National Forum Insight later this year. \nThis webinar will be chaired by Dr Áine Ní Shé\, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs\, Munster Technological University – Cork\, and National Forum Board Member. \nSpeakers will be: \n\nIrene Hayden\, Lecturer – Department of Building and Civil Engineering\, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology\nDr Brendan O’Connell\, Assistant Professor – School of English\, Trinity College Dublin\nDr Lisa Padden\, Project Lead – University for All\, UCD Access & Lifelong Learning\nDr Fiona O’Riordan\, Academic Developer\, & Rob Lowney\, Learning Technologist – Teaching Enhancement Unit\, Dublin City University\nDr Adrienne Fleming\, Department of Science\, School of Science and Computing\, TU Dublin\nStudent speaker to be confirmed\n\nYou can register for this webinar here. \nThis webinar is part of a National Webinar Series taking place throughout 2021. View details of the full Series here.

SUMMARY:What is the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations? Part 1
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, the future for the assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Thursday 6 May. \nIn this webinar\, we open a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. We will share and debate a range of perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers\, and other stakeholders. We reflect on the previous work including the work of the National Forum in this space and reconsider our key principles for assessment. We will address current pressing concerns such as academic integrity\, and online proctoring of exams. The question of whether alternative forms of authentic assessment could enable us to design out issues we have identified will be discussed. \nThe pandemic has surfaced issues of care for students and staff and while we consider pedagogies of care\, we need also to consider assessment with care: how can we address the workload and overload experienced by many students and staff in relation to exams? What might we keep and what might we lose following our experiences since 2020? How can we accommodate practical assessment and modes of assessment considered essential for accreditation by professional bodies? The webinar begins this conversation which will continue into a second event later in May. \nThis webinar will be chaired by Dr Áine Ní Shé\, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs\, MTU\, Cork Campus\, and National Forum Board Member. \nSpeakers to be announced shortly. \nYou can register for this webinar here. \nDetails of other events in the National Webinar Series can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:Towards a National Understanding of Agile Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the entire higher education community\, will focus on the key features of an agile and innovative curriculum. The concept of agile curricula has come to prominence in recent years\, not least through the HEA’s recent Human Capital Initiative Pillar 3\, which has seen a Government investment of €197 million over the 5-year period\, 2020 to 2024. Aligning with the significant related work on which institutions are now embarking\, this webinar will begin a national conversation on how we understand the concept of an agile curriculum and what can be learned and shared across related projects and initiatives at national level. \nHCI Pillar 3 (Innovation and Agility) has resulted in 22 large-scale collaborative projects being funded across the higher education sector. Through projects recommended under this pillar\, ‘innovative methods of teaching and delivery will be promoted\, so that learners will benefit from improved quality and more engaging ways of learning on enterprise-focused courses’. HCI Pillar 3 emphasises agility and expresses the strategic aim of government to enable institutions ‘to anticipate\, understand and respond to emerging skills needs (…)\, to deliver new courses or adapt existing courses\, so that institutions can more quickly respond to emerging developments in technology and enterprise’. Pillar 3 projects will enable institutions ‘to provide lifelong learning and upskilling opportunities’. \nSpeakers for this webinar are: \nChair\, Dr Jim Murray (THEA and National Forum Board Member) \nProf Denise Rooney\, Virtual Laboratories in Higher Education \nProf Denise Rooney is Head of the Department of Chemistry and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science in Maynooth University. SUMMARY:Webinar: Learning Analytics: Innovative Practices
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_message]This event has passed. Click here to view the recording.[/vc_message][vc_column_text] \nIn line with our key strategic priority focused on student success\, the National Forum is delighted to announce the second in our series of learning analytics webinars\, which will take place on Wednesday\, 6 November from 12:30-13:30. The purpose of this event\, which is open to all\, is to highlight a number of innovative learning analytics initiatives that will be of interest to staff who teach and policymakers/managers in higher education institutions who wish to learn more about how data can be used to enhance student success. \nTopics will include investigating how to achieve effective interventions prompted by LA data (Erasmus+ Onwards from Learning Analytics (OfLA) project)\, the use of low stakes formative quizzes to dynamically inform impactful teaching design (WIT). We will also see how data is being used to coordinate module assessments\, manage students’ workload and identify students that may be at risk (DCU). \nIn addition to giving participants an opportunity to hear more about good practices in other institutions\, this webinar will also enable them to connect with colleagues across the sector who may share areas of interest or expertise in relation to data-enabled student success. \nThe recording of our first LA webinar\, Learning Analytics: What Works? is available here. \nRegistration\nTo register for this webinar\, please click here. \nQuestions can be directed to Lee.OFarrell@teachingandlearning.ie.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
