SUMMARY:What is the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations? Part 1
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, the future for the assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Thursday 6 May. \nFor some time\, research analysing assessment in higher education has raised questions about the effectiveness and reliability of traditional final exam-based assessment. The closure of campuses in light of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to immediate changes in formative and summative assessment practices in higher education in Ireland\, with the cancellation of on-campus exams. Alternative assessment modes\, most of which were online\, were developed within a matter of weeks. This represented a sudden and critical challenge across the sector\, but it has also opened the opportunity for us collectively to revisit the rationale for\, and purposes of\, final exam-based assessment in our programmes. \nIn this webinar\, we open a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. We will share and debate a range of perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers\, and other stakeholders. We reflect on the previous work including the work of the National Forum in this space and reconsider our key principles for assessment. We will address current pressing concerns such as academic integrity\, and online proctoring of exams. The question of whether alternative forms of authentic assessment could enable us to design out issues we have identified will be discussed. \nThe pandemic has surfaced issues of care for students and staff and while we consider pedagogies of care\, we need also to consider assessment with care: how can we address the workload and overload experienced by many students and staff in relation to exams? What might we keep and what might we lose following our experiences since 2020? How can we accommodate practical assessment and modes of assessment considered essential for accreditation by professional bodies? The webinar begins this conversation which will continue into a second event later in May. \nThis webinar will be chaired by Dr Áine Ní Shé\, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs\, MTU\, Cork Campus\, and National Forum Board Member. \nSpeakers to be announced shortly. \nYou can register for this webinar here. \nDetails of other events in the National Webinar Series can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:Climbing the UDL ladder: Building a Culture of Inclusion in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:This CUA Universal Design for Learning (UDL) conference will investigate a myriad of approaches to UDL through an exploration of shared best inclusive practice. Through creating an awareness of a cross-campus approach to implementing a culture of inclusion and diversity\, the Institute of Technology Sligo (IT Sligo) has made significant strides in climbing the UDL ladder to bring this vision to reality. The teaching and learning framework that is UDL has guided this transition to provide for a high-quality educational experience. Together with our partners Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT)\, IT Sligo welcomes colleagues across all higher education institutions to examine and reflect on your UDL practices within your programme to ensure the student learning experience provides for the unique learning needs of students in a changing world. \nConference Themes: \n\nStudent engagement & capturing the student voice\n\nPresenters will guide conference participants through the shift needed in the teaching dynamic to one of collaborative curriculum development and allowing students to engage in the process so that they can take control and ownership of their learning process. Presentations will discuss curriculum redesigns that facilitates students to set their own pace and goals and evaluate their own progress. \n\nImproving the student experience through digital enhancement\n\nThis segment provides a thorough discussion on the impact of digital enhancement using UDL principles. This includes curriculum redesigns that have sought to reduce student challenges by providing helpful relevant digital tools to aid understanding in their subject material. \n\nLearning through Covid-19: Flipping the classroom using UDL.\n\nWere your students feeling isolated in their learning due to Covid-19 restrictions?  This segment focuses on curriculum redesigns that involve the use of the UDL framework to ‘flip the classroom’ to foster student engagement and peer collaboration. \n\nAuthentic Student Experience: showcasing UDL teaching approaches.\n\nPresentations which showcase UDL teaching approaches that consider lecturers real world experience and prompt students to engage as the practitioner. Curriculum redesigns that increase student motivation through any of the following teaching approaches such as: work-based learning\, enquiry-based learning\, or problem-based learning approaches. \n\nAdopting Alternative Assessment Practices through a UDL lens\n\nPresentations will address alternative pathways to student success which remove potential barriers making learning goals attainable. Alternative representation examples of flexible options available in an assessment which can enhance access\, support learner performance\, and reduce possible perceived threats. \nFor further information please visit the conference website by clicking here.

SUMMARY:That is the Future for the Assessment of Learning through Final Examinations? Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, alternatives to assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Friday 28 May. \nBuilding on the Part 1 on 06 May\, in this webinar we continue a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. In this webinar\, we share a range of examples showcasing alternative assessments to exams. We will explore the theme of assessment for engagement\, and hear perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers and other stakeholders. We will consider the implications of continuing with final exams\, and in particular online exams which require proctoring. The issues arising from the use of online proctoring will be identified and discussed\, with experiences shared by staff and students who have experienced this mode of assessment. We consider assessment from the perspective of care\, and how the educational landscape post-Covid -19 can effectively address some of the negative experiences of assessment online and offline. The conversations from Part 1 and Part 2 will inform a National Forum Insight later this year. \nThis webinar will be chaired by Dr Áine Ní Shé\, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs\, Munster Technological University – Cork\, and National Forum Board Member. \nSpeakers will be: \n\nIrene Hayden\, Lecturer – Department of Building and Civil Engineering\, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology\nDr Brendan O’Connell\, Assistant Professor – School of English\, Trinity College Dublin\nDr Lisa Padden\, Project Lead – University for All\, UCD Access & Lifelong Learning\nDr Fiona O’Riordan\, Academic Developer\, & Rob Lowney\, Learning Technologist – Teaching Enhancement Unit\, Dublin City University\nDr Adrienne Fleming\, Department of Science\, School of Science and Computing\, TU Dublin\nStudent speaker to be confirmed\n\nYou can register for this webinar here. \nThis webinar is part of a National Webinar Series taking place throughout 2021. View details of the full Series here.
