SUMMARY:The John Kelly Award for UDL in Further & Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:The John Kelly Award for Universal Design in Further and Higher Education recognises the innovative practice of teaching staff in further and higher education engaging with the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to deliver a more inclusive learning experience for their students. The award aims to celebrate and promote the use of UDL in further education and higher education settings. \nThe awards are targeted at practitioners who have demonstrated their emergent commitment to UDL by undertaking the Digital Badge for Universal Design in Teaching & Learning and making exciting changes to their practice above and beyond their initial redesign. \nAfter a successful relaunch last year\, applications are now open for the Individual award category. To give our institutions and organisations the opportunity to further embed and develop UDL within their contexts\, the Collaborative award category will not be running this year but will return in 2024. \nThe awards are named after the late Professor John Kelly\, former Registrar of UCD and founding Chair of AHEAD in recognition of his pioneering work. John sadly passed away last year. We were delighted that he could address the audience in person at the awards final in October 2022. \nRegister for the John Kelly Awards 2023 Online Final Event \nSHORTLISTED FINALISTS 2023\nFurther Education and Training\n\nMarie Collins CDETB\nAoife Keaney NLN\nGeraldine Kyle KCETB\nCelia O’Shea Kerry College\n\nHigher Education\n\nKate Dunne ATU Connemara\nPauline Logue ATU\nJenny Moffett RCSI\nTrish O’Connell ATU Galway City\n\nTHE JOHN KELLY AWARDS FINAL 2023; SUSTAINING MOMENTUM IN UNIVERSAL DESIGN IN TERTIARY EDUCATION\nIn celebration of the John Kelly awards 2023\, UCD Access & Lifelong Learning are excited to invite all those interested in universal design in tertiary education across Ireland to our online final event on Tuesday November 14th from 10:00 to 13:15. \nThe event will provide a platform for the 2023 finalists to present on their implementations of UDL and their plans for the future. SUMMARY:Assessment and Feedback in Placement Settings
DESCRIPTION:If you are involved in placement\, you may have wondered about how best to assess student performance when what’s involved is so different from typical academic activities where students attend and engage in lectures\, practicals\, tutorials\,etc. You may already have students reflecting on their work or may even be considering incorporating reflection for the first time. However\, there are often additional challenges associated with work placement in that students are remote from you as opposed to typical assessment where you can more easily engage with them. Have you ever wondered what the students’ views on assessment and feedback in work placement settings are? \nIn this seminar\, we will get some global\, national and local insights into the challenges and solutions to conducting assessment and providing feedback in a work placement setting. Firstly\, we will hear from Professor Rola Ajjawi about some of the challenges faced within the Australian setting together with thoughts on solutions that have worked. Secondly\, Dr. Geraldine O’Neill will discuss findings from a wide ranging study that she conducted with students\, host organisations and academics. Thirdly\, Dr Tom O’Mahony and Catherine Murphy will discuss some of the results of research they are conducting into enhancing feedback and assessment in work placement modules in MTU and will share data gathered data from 270 students. \nIn conclusion\, options for next steps will be shared with all those interested in redesigning their assessment and feedback approach to work placement. \nThis seminar is funded as part of MTU’s Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement Funding 2022-23 (SATLE 2022-23) with coordination and support from the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU). \nRegistration \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ie/e/assessment-feedback-in-placement-settings-challenges-solutions-tickets-745949955397?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Cultivating the next generation of green and digital innovators – the critical role of mainstream higher education
DESCRIPTION:International Online Knowledge Exchange (Thursday 11 January 2024\, 14:30 – 16:15 CET / 13:30 – 15:15 Dublin Time) \nZoom Videoconference (click here to register) \nThe OECD and the European Commission (EC) have joined efforts to establish an Education and Innovation Practice Community (EIPC). The EIPC seeks to boost dialogue and advance understanding of the competencies that help to trigger and shape innovation for the digital and green transitions\, as well as “deep tech” innovation\, as foreseen under the New European Innovation Agenda of the EC\, Flagship 4: Fostering\, attracting and retaining deep tech talent (europa.eu). This webinar will examine how higher education institutions\, in their role as providers of advanced education and skills\, are adapting mainstream degree programmes to build and deepen the competencies needed for digital\, green\, and deep-tech innovation. It will also reflect on how public policy can support these efforts across OECD and EU countries. \nView Schedule \nView Background Note

SUMMARY:UNESCO ICT in Education Prize: Digital learning for greening education
DESCRIPTION:The UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education recognizes innovative approaches in leveraging new technologies to expand educational and lifelong learning opportunities for all\, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Goal 4 on education. \nEstablished in 2005 with the support of the Kingdom of Bahrain\, the Prize rewards individuals and organizations that are implementing outstanding projects and promoting the creative use of technologies to enhance learning\, teaching and overall educational performance in the digital age. An international Jury selects two best projects annually. Each prizewinner receives US$ 25\,000\, a medal and a diploma during a ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Every year the Prize has a specific theme\, which\, while being in line with UNESCO’s mandate and values\, advocates for responsible and ethical use of information and communication technologies. \nThe 2023 edition of the Prize has been launched. \nDeadline for application and nomination: 5 February 2024 \nTheme for 2023: Digital learning for greening education. \nThe 2023 edition of the UNESCO ICT in Education Prize aims to explore the synergies between digital learning and greening education\, two priority areas underscored during the Transforming Education Summit that took place in 2022. \nDigital learning\, with its potential to expand access and improve the quality of learning\, offers an avenue for the delivery of curricula and pedagogy to equip learners with the knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes on climate change and promote sustainable development. Thus\, the 2023 edition of the Prize aims to surface and maximize the impact of best practices in leveraging digital technologies to develop competencies and forge an active commitment to sustainable development among learners. \nMore Information: https://www.unesco.org/en/prizes/ict-education

SUMMARY:Reinventing University: the Digital Challenge in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Digital transformation in Higher Education (HE) is a major priority for the European Union (EU). In the years to come\, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will be reconstructed at all levels of their operation. By adopting the Digital Education Action Plan (2021-2027) on 30 September 2020\, the EU targets a high-quality\, accessible and inclusive digital education supporting the Member States’ entry into a digital era. Implementing learning and training have been considered key factors to allow modern societies and economies to face the challenges of globalisation and technological progress. Developing digital skills has become essential in this framework to foster lifelong learning and reduce inequalities. By 2030\, university students worldwide should reach 414 million\, and to meet their needs\, Universities must deliver quality and relevant future-proof skills\, foster diversity and inclusion\, and promote and protect democratic practices\, fundamental rights and academic values (EE.UU 2021/C 66/01). \nYou can find more information here: Reinventing University: the Digital Challenge in Higher Education
