SUMMARY:Developing a Best Practice Framework for Engaging External Practitioners and Tutors (online event)
DESCRIPTION:Challenges exist in engaging external/practitioner tutors to teach in HEIs\, i.e. those experienced industry or professional services experts who are contracted by the HEI\, to deliver modules\, particularly on professional education programmes. \nThe BLASST framework (Harvey\, 2014) is a set of national (Australian) benchmarking standards to systematise good practice for learning and teaching with part-time or sessional staff. The framework presents broad criteria and standards for evaluating current practices affecting these staff. \nThis online presentation will discuss the REAP project’s experience of evaluating\, adapting and applying the BLASST framework to a local Irish context as a tool for evaluation of current practice and guiding plans to work towards best practice in the engagement of external/practitioner tutors. \nThe REAP project is a collaboration between UL\, MIC & LIT funded by the HEA Innovation and Transformation 2018 call\, to develop a best practice framework for engaging practitioner/external tutors. \nFocus of the event \n\nConsidering how the relational\, structural\, practical or policy aspects of teaching and learning can be valued\, supported and recognised\n\nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Thinking with Things: harnessing Creativity for Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will incorporate hands-on and arts-based/maker approaches to teaching and learning. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr Briony Supple\, Senior Lecturer\, Design Thinking Pedagogy and Praxis\, School of Education\, in collaboration with a number of artists\, faculty members and students from the PG Diploma in Innovation through Design Thinking program at UCC. \nHands-on\, tactile and creative practices will be used as a tool for participants to harness as a way of reflecting on themselves as educators and the experiences of their students. SUMMARY:Valuing and enhancing the teaching of external practitioner tutors in HEIs (online event)
DESCRIPTION:Specific challenges exist in developing the essential skills of external tutors new to teaching and moderating online. External/practitioner tutors are those who have come into HEI teaching environments from industry or professional positions and are contracted by the HEI\, to develop and deliver modules\, particularly on professional education programmes. DESCRIPTION:Dr Eithne Hunt hosts the Brainpower showcase and launch of the Brainpower digital badge. \nBookended by puberty and culturally defined adult roles\, scientists and researchers now agree that adolescence extends from age 10-24 years. To realise student success\, higher education institutions must take into account that the majority of their undergraduate students are still adolescents\, without fully developed cognitive\, social\, emotional and self-regulatory capacities\, living and learning in a socio-cultural environment that offers less external regulation than ever before. Created by a team of academics and scientists from occupational science and occupational therapy\, applied psychology and neuroscience\, with contributions from students and higher education staff\, Brainpower is a free\, online\, self-paced course\, focusing on harnessing the power and potential of adolescent brain and behaviour for enhanced learning\, wellbeing and student success in higher education. \nAlthough targeted mainly at academic and academic support staff in higher education\, Brainpower is likely to be of interest to staff across further and higher education\, nationally and internationally\, as well as parents\, school teachers\, coaches and all those who contribute to the lives of young people. It is publicly available to all under Creative Commons License via Canvas Public. DESCRIPTION:This online interactive seminar and workshop will feature a keynote presentation by Dr.Peter Bryant of the University of Sydney (Associate Dean Education & Associate Professor Business Education)\,  that will explore and reflect on how university teaching and learning approaches required pedagogical change due to the move online. The future implications for digital education practices\, across disciplines\, will also be discussed. The keynote will be followed by three interactive\, faculty-focused breakout sessions where Trinity academics from the respective faculty will give a short “lightning” presentation (10 mins) on a digital teaching/assessment approach that worked well for them (taking into consideration subject pedagogies) and how it might be rolled out in their discipline.  An activity will follow within each breakout session where participants will get an opportunity to further explore challenges and implications for their own teaching and learning practices and disciplinary contexts (20 mins) and consider next steps (10 mins). DESCRIPTION:The shift to remote teaching in response to the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of the social dimension of education and trained a focus on the notion of presence at both social and pedagogical levels (Garrison\, Anderson and Archer\, 2001). For learners\, making their presence felt in an online environment may be perceived in terms of risk and teachers may struggle to generate satisfactory levels of engagement. In this seminar\, David White probes the notion of presence and students’ motivation to engage in both the on and off line environments. SUMMARY:Embedding Global Citizenship Education into TU Dublin Programmes: Starting a Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Building on the work of TU Dublin’s community of practice www.sdglitercy.ie \, this one-hour workshop\, which will facilitate both in-person and online participation\, will provide an opportunity to kick-start conversations among students\, staff and between students and staff in TU Dublin. The workshop will focus on exploring how the community of students and staff in TU Dublin can work together to empower each other to make informed decisions and take individual and collective action to meet the societal and global challenges we all face. In particular: Exploring key enablers and barriers to facilitating the development of global citizens as part of TU Dublin programmes; Examining how sustainability can be embedded into the curriculum of all degree programmes; Exploring the role of assessment in developing key skills needed. In addition\, students and staff will be invited to submit a poster related to the UNESCO sustainability goals/ their experience of how assessment has helped or could help to achieve these goals as part of a curriculum. \nThe event will start with a short lunch and networking opportunity for those attending in person. SUMMARY:Nurturing Wellness within Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Recent times have brought our awareness of wellbeing into sharp focus. We acknowledge its importance\, but what is it exactlyand how can we practically support it within teaching and learning? \nWithin MTU Crawford we have developed a number of initiatives that we can showcase – The Creativity Tonic website\, the 5 Ways to Wellbeing Activities resource and a mobile studio bike project. In January we are hosting a Fulbright Scholar (RhondaSchaller) who will work with lecturing staff to develop a toolkit of techniques to support wellness and build resilience\, embedding positive pedagogy and mindfulness in our teaching practice. \nAn online talk and Q&A\, delivered by Rhonda Schaller\, will focus on wellbeing and positive pedagogy.
