SUMMARY:Towards a National Understanding of Agile Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the entire higher education community\, will focus on the key features of an agile and innovative curriculum. The concept of agile curricula has come to prominence in recent years\, not least through the HEA’s recent Human Capital Initiative Pillar 3\, which has seen a Government investment of €197 million over the 5-year period\, 2020 to 2024. Aligning with the significant related work on which institutions are now embarking\, this webinar will begin a national conversation on how we understand the concept of an agile curriculum and what can be learned and shared across related projects and initiatives at national level. \nHCI Pillar 3 (Innovation and Agility) has resulted in 22 large-scale collaborative projects being funded across the higher education sector. Through projects recommended under this pillar\, ‘innovative methods of teaching and delivery will be promoted\, so that learners will benefit from improved quality and more engaging ways of learning on enterprise-focused courses’. HCI Pillar 3 emphasises agility and expresses the strategic aim of government to enable institutions ‘to anticipate\, understand and respond to emerging skills needs (…)\, to deliver new courses or adapt existing courses\, so that institutions can more quickly respond to emerging developments in technology and enterprise’. Pillar 3 projects will enable institutions ‘to provide lifelong learning and upskilling opportunities’. \nSpeakers for this webinar are: \nChair\, Dr Jim Murray (THEA and National Forum Board Member) \nProf Denise Rooney\, Virtual Laboratories in Higher Education \nProf Denise Rooney is Head of the Department of Chemistry and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science in Maynooth University. Prof. Rooney is Project Manager of the Virtual Laboratories in Higher Education HCI project. The initiative brings together five Higher Education Institutions: Athlone Institute of Technology\, Dublin City University\, Dundalk Institute of Technology and University College Cork with education technology providers\, to develop courses in which a virtual laboratory experience is complemented with a real laboratory experience. \nProf Ann Ledwith\, UL@Work \nProf Ann Wedwith is the Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at UL with responsibility for growing UL’s postgraduate and professional programmes and improving the quality of the learning experience of these students. She leads the HCI funded UL@Work project that aims to build a flexible\, technology-enhanced learning platform to respond to digitisation and the future world of work in close collaboration with enterprise partners. \nDr Deirdre Lillis\, CONVENE: Transforming university-enterprise engagement for a co-created innovation and skills ecosystem in Dublin \nDr Deirdre Lillis is a member of the board of the Higher Education Authority\, the Senate of the National University of Ireland\, and Head of the School of Computer Science at TU Dublin\, City Campus. SUMMARY:What is the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations? Part 1
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, the future for the assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Thursday 6 May. \nFor some time\, research analysing assessment in higher education has raised questions about the effectiveness and reliability of traditional final exam-based assessment. The closure of campuses in light of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to immediate changes in formative and summative assessment practices in higher education in Ireland\, with the cancellation of on-campus exams. Alternative assessment modes\, most of which were online\, were developed within a matter of weeks. This represented a sudden and critical challenge across the sector\, but it has also opened the opportunity for us collectively to revisit the rationale for\, and purposes of\, final exam-based assessment in our programmes. \nIn this webinar\, we open a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. We will share and debate a range of perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers\, and other stakeholders. We reflect on the previous work including the work of the National Forum in this space and reconsider our key principles for assessment. We will address current pressing concerns such as academic integrity\, and online proctoring of exams. The question of whether alternative forms of authentic assessment could enable us to design out issues we have identified will be discussed. \nThe pandemic has surfaced issues of care for students and staff and while we consider pedagogies of care\, we need also to consider assessment with care: how can we address the workload and overload experienced by many students and staff in relation to exams? What might we keep and what might we lose following our experiences since 2020? How can we accommodate practical assessment and modes of assessment considered essential for accreditation by professional bodies? The webinar begins this conversation which will continue into a second event later in May. \nThis webinar will be chaired by Dr Áine Ní Shé\, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs\, MTU\, Cork Campus\, and National Forum Board Member. \nSpeakers to be announced shortly. \nYou can register for this webinar here. \nDetails of other events in the National Webinar Series can be found here. \n

SUMMARY:Climbing the UDL ladder: Building a Culture of Inclusion in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:This CUA Universal Design for Learning (UDL) conference will investigate a myriad of approaches to UDL through an exploration of shared best inclusive practice. Through creating an awareness of a cross-campus approach to implementing a culture of inclusion and diversity\, the Institute of Technology Sligo (IT Sligo) has made significant strides in climbing the UDL ladder to bring this vision to reality. The teaching and learning framework that is UDL has guided this transition to provide for a high-quality educational experience. Together with our partners Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT)\, IT Sligo welcomes colleagues across all higher education institutions to examine and reflect on your UDL practices within your programme to ensure the student learning experience provides for the unique learning needs of students in a changing world. \nConference Themes: \n\nStudent engagement & capturing the student voice\n\nPresenters will guide conference participants through the shift needed in the teaching dynamic to one of collaborative curriculum development and allowing students to engage in the process so that they can take control and ownership of their learning process. Presentations will discuss curriculum redesigns that facilitates students to set their own pace and goals and evaluate their own progress. \n\nImproving the student experience through digital enhancement\n\nThis segment provides a thorough discussion on the impact of digital enhancement using UDL principles. This includes curriculum redesigns that have sought to reduce student challenges by providing helpful relevant digital tools to aid understanding in their subject material. \n\nLearning through Covid-19: Flipping the classroom using UDL.\n\nWere your students feeling isolated in their learning due to Covid-19 restrictions?  This segment focuses on curriculum redesigns that involve the use of the UDL framework to ‘flip the classroom’ to foster student engagement and peer collaboration. \n\nAuthentic Student Experience: showcasing UDL teaching approaches.\n\nPresentations which showcase UDL teaching approaches that consider lecturers real world experience and prompt students to engage as the practitioner. Curriculum redesigns that increase student motivation through any of the following teaching approaches such as: work-based learning\, enquiry-based learning\, or problem-based learning approaches. \n\nAdopting Alternative Assessment Practices through a UDL lens\n\nPresentations will address alternative pathways to student success which remove potential barriers making learning goals attainable. Alternative representation examples of flexible options available in an assessment which can enhance access\, support learner performance\, and reduce possible perceived threats. \nFor further information please visit the conference website by clicking here.

SUMMARY:That is the Future for the Assessment of Learning through Final Examinations? Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, alternatives to assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Friday 28 May. \nBuilding on the Part 1 on 06 May\, in this webinar we continue a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. In this webinar\, we share a range of examples showcasing alternative assessments to exams. We will explore the theme of assessment for engagement\, and hear perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers and other stakeholders. We will consider the implications of continuing with final exams\, and in particular online exams which require proctoring. The issues arising from the use of online proctoring will be identified and discussed\, with experiences shared by staff and students who have experienced this mode of assessment. We consider assessment from the perspective of care\, and how the educational landscape post-Covid -19 can effectively address some of the negative experiences of assessment online and offline. The conversations from Part 1 and Part 2 will inform a National Forum Insight later this year. \nThis webinar will be chaired by Dr Áine Ní Shé\, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs\, Munster Technological University – Cork\, and National Forum Board Member. \nSpeakers will be: \n\nIrene Hayden\, Lecturer – Department of Building and Civil Engineering\, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology\nDr Brendan O’Connell\, Assistant Professor – School of English\, Trinity College Dublin\nDr Lisa Padden\, Project Lead – University for All\, UCD Access & Lifelong Learning\nDr Fiona O’Riordan\, Academic Developer\, & Rob Lowney\, Learning Technologist – Teaching Enhancement Unit\, Dublin City University\nDr Adrienne Fleming\, Department of Science\, School of Science and Computing\, TU Dublin\nStudent speaker to be confirmed\n\nYou can register for this webinar here. \nThis webinar is part of a National Webinar Series taking place throughout 2021. SUMMARY:Webinar: Developing Enabling Policies for Digital and Open Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Taking place on Thursday 10 June 2021\, this webinar will share developments and invite feedback on the project to develop a new National Forum ‘Guide to Developing Enabling Policies for Digital and Open Teaching & Learning’. \nInstitutional policy-making can\, and should\, engage individuals across the organisation; policy-making is not the remit of senior managers only. This is especially so when the subject of those policies are topics related to digital and open teaching and learning (T&L)\, e.g. Lecture Recording\, Virtual Classrooms\, Assessment\, Open Educational Resources. \nIn this webinar\, as in institutional policy-making\, we would like to encourage as wide a range of people as possible to join the conversation. This might include people who are already involved in developing digital\, open and/or T&L policies\, as well as those who would like to be involved in the consultation or development of such policies\, or policy briefs\, procedures\, guidelines. All higher education staff and students are invited to participate. \nThe new National Forum ‘Guide to Developing Enabling Policies for Digital and Open Teaching & Learning’ is currently being developed\, drawing on wide consultation including workshops that took place across the sector in 2019\, as well as conversations with many individuals who have been developing and updating institutional policies since March 2020\, taking into account the new context of remote/online T&L. \nDuring this webinar\, the National Forum will share key aspects of the proposed guide and invite your feedback on important questions\, including: \n\nWhat key policy areas (in Digital/Open Teaching & Learning) should be addressed in the guide?\nWhat content and tools would you expect to find in the guide\, in order for it to be most useful?\nWho is involved in policy development/consultation at your institution or organisation?\nWhat are the biggest challenges for policy development at your institution or organisation?\n\nWebinar speakers: \n\nCatherine Cronin\, Strategic Education Developer\, National Forum\nChloe Power\, Student Associate Intern\, National Forum\nNiamh Brennan\, Programme Manager for Research Informatics\, Trinity College Dublin\nTony Murphy\, Head of Quality Enhancement and Innovation in Teaching and Learning\, Dublin Business School\nSarah O’Toole\, Educational Developer\, Limerick Institute of Technology\n\nRegistration for this webinar is available here. \nThis webinar is part of the National Forum’s 2021 National Webinar Series. SUMMARY:Life Long Learning in Pharmacy 2021
DESCRIPTION:The National Forum is delighted to support the upcoming Life Long Learning in Pharmacy International Conference 2021. This will be a virtual conference\, taking place from Sunday 27th to Wednesday 30th June 2021\, hosted from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland\, Dublin. \nThe LLLP conferences bring together international and national colleagues to share their interest and research in the area of pharmacy education and professional development. The conference facilitates participant access to high quality educational programs\, internationally significant research and development\, and world-renowned leaders in the field. \nThe 2021 conference will be a particularly special one\, because the opportunity to connect at LLLP 2020 was missed due to COVID-19. The experiences and learnings delegates will have to share from the past year will guarantee rich conference content. Added to this\, there will be the special connection\, collaboration and community\, which have now become hallmarks of the LLLP conferences. Delegates who have previously attended LLLP will have the opportunity to build on established relationships with international colleagues as well as form new connections. New participants will find a warm welcome into a new international network. \nFor more information on the conference keynotes\, programme\, key dates and registration\, see here.
