SUMMARY:Designing Learning Outcomes for Labs
DESCRIPTION:The ability to deliver effective laboratories in higher education came under sharp focus during the pandemic with the move to online teaching and learning. Prior to this move\, the department of Multidisciplinary Engineering Education in the University of Sheffield had re-examined their approach to the provision of labs across engineering programmes. As a result they developed a new model for lab delivery\, one that included rigorous development of learning outcomes for the labs\, with a focus on the cross disciplinary nature of practical engineering skills. During the pandemic they found that these changes facilitated a somewhat smoother transition of labs to the online mode than may otherwise have been expected. \nIn this workshop Prof Andrew Garrard and Dr Adam Funnell will outline their experiences of refocusing the labs within the engineering programmes in the University of Sheffield\, and what worked and what didn’t during the pandemic. As part of the workshop\, you will be guided through the process of developing effective learning outcomes for your labs that are situated within the wider context of the module and the associated programme. You will also be facilitated in the development of lab types that can be used both to achieve different types of learning outcomes and different modes of lab delivery.  \nThis event has been funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education \nClick here to register \nPlease note that this is an in-person event.

SUMMARY:Leadership for strategic change and development in Teaching & Learning in European Universities
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Universities Association is pleased to offer an online policy dialogue workshop which will focus of the issue of leadership for strategic change and development in teaching and learning in European universities. This event is organised in the framework of the EUA-led project “Leadership and Organisation for Learning and Teaching at European Universities” (LOTUS) in which IUA is a partner. The policy dialogue workshop will build on recent work undertaken in Ireland by the IUA’s Enhancing Digital Teaching and Learning project\, and the National Forum for the Enhancement of T&L’s Next Steps project. \nThe event will also present practices from other European countries and offer an overview of how the EU Recovery Fund is being used to strengthen teaching and learning in a range of member states in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. \nThe policy dialogue workshop will be of interest to institutional leaders with a responsibility in learning and teaching\, teachers\, education developers\, national and European policy leaders\, as well as representatives of stakeholder organisations active in learning and teaching. \nThe event will be hosted on the Zoom platform. DESCRIPTION:Virtual conference led by and aimed at students with disabilities\nAHEAD and the Union of Students in Ireland are happy to present the Power of Disability Conference 2022\, taking place January 20th and 21st. \nThis two day event will include discussions\, presentations and feedback sessions encouraging students with disabilities to be leaders on their own campuses and provide information for students and Students’ Union officers on the issues facing students with disabilities. \nDay 1 of the conference will focus on education. SUMMARY:Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) report launch on international students’ experiences in Ireland

DESCRIPTION:This face to face one-day event will enable Irish language lecturers at DCU to share their teaching experiences with their colleagues and facilitate internal strategic discussions on how teaching and learning can be strengthened and valued in Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaeilge. One of Ireland’s leading Irish language curriculum-development experts\,  Éamonn Ó Dónaill will give a presentation on the importance of the syllabus and will facilitate the sessions on teaching and learning. Dr Colin Flynn\, (Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaeilge) applied linguist and author of “Foghlaim an Dara Teanga” will discuss recent research in minority language acquisition. DESCRIPTION:The Union of Students Ireland with the support of the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education invites you to the online webinar on “Supporting Wellbeing in Practice” across the sector.   \nThe Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and the National Forum partnered on a very exciting research project beginning in January 2021 that examined the practice of embedding wellbeing in the curriculum in higher education in Ireland. The project set out to capture how wellbeing is currently being embedded in the curricula of higher education institutions nationally and internationally and identify features of good practice. The research has culminated in a report completed by Dr Jessica Surdey and Dr Deirdre Byrne which discusses the key insights gained from the study and exemplars of good practice identified. This report will be launched at the event.  \nThe project was complemented by a working group chaired by the USI President created by the Minister for Further and Higher Education\, Simon Harris T.D.\, to identify\, refine and implement strategies to enhance student engagement and wellbeing.  \nThis event will feature lightning talks from the leaders of innovative projects around student mental health that have built the evidence base for the sector. SUMMARY:Competencies\, Expectations and Learning Contracts in Work-Based Assessment:  How are they related?
DESCRIPTION:The National Forum\, in partnership with Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI)\, will host an online webinar entitled ‘Competencies\, Expectations and Learning Contracts in Work-Based Assessment: How are they related?’ on Thursday\, 23 September 2021\, 12.00-13.30. \nAssessment of work-integrated learning can be challenging in relation to the: \n\nExpectation of what is to be assessed in advance of the experience (the level and number of competencies)\,\nThe diverse learning opportunities provided by the placement/experience for these competencies\, and the\nUnique learning goals of the students.\n\nRecent research\, by Associate Professor Geraldine O’Neill as part of her National Forum Teaching and Learning (NFTL) Research Fellowship\, has highlighted some initial findings that may help understand the relationship between these three challenges. SUMMARY:Webinar: Developing Enabling Policies for Digital and Open Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Taking place on Thursday 10 June 2021\, this webinar will share developments and invite feedback on the project to develop a new National Forum ‘Guide to Developing Enabling Policies for Digital and Open Teaching & Learning’. \nInstitutional policy-making can\, and should\, engage individuals across the organisation; policy-making is not the remit of senior managers only. This is especially so when the subject of those policies are topics related to digital and open teaching and learning (T&L)\, e.g. Lecture Recording\, Virtual Classrooms\, Assessment\, Open Educational Resources. \nIn this webinar\, as in institutional policy-making\, we would like to encourage as wide a range of people as possible to join the conversation. This might include people who are already involved in developing digital\, open and/or T&L policies\, as well as those who would like to be involved in the consultation or development of such policies\, or policy briefs\, procedures\, guidelines. SUMMARY:That is the Future for the Assessment of Learning through Final Examinations? Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the higher education community\, will focus on assessment and specifically\, alternatives to assessment of learning through final (terminal) examinations. It takes place from 12.30-13.30 on Friday 28 May. \nFor some time\, research analysing assessment in higher education has raised questions about the effectiveness and reliability of traditional final exam-based assessment. The closure of campuses in light of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 led to immediate changes in formative and summative assessment practices in higher education in Ireland\, with the cancellation of on-campus exams. Alternative assessment modes\, most of which were online\, were developed within a matter of weeks. This represented a sudden and critical challenge across the sector\, but it has also opened the opportunity for us collectively to revisit the rationale for\, and purposes of\, final exam-based assessment in our programmes. \nBuilding on the Part 1 on 06 May\, in this webinar we continue a national conversation about the future for the assessment of learning through final examinations. In this webinar\, we share a range of examples showcasing alternative assessments to exams. We will explore the theme of assessment for engagement\, and hear perspectives from students and staff\, senior managers and other stakeholders. We will consider the implications of continuing with final exams\, and in particular online exams which require proctoring. The issues arising from the use of online proctoring will be identified and discussed\, with experiences shared by staff and students who have experienced this mode of assessment. We consider assessment from the perspective of care\, and how the educational landscape post-Covid -19 can effectively address some of the negative experiences of assessment online and offline. SUMMARY:Towards a National Understanding of Agile Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:This National Forum webinar\, open to the entire higher education community\, will focus on the key features of an agile and innovative curriculum. The concept of agile curricula has come to prominence in recent years\, not least through the HEA’s recent Human Capital Initiative Pillar 3\, which has seen a Government investment of €197 million over the 5-year period\, 2020 to 2024. Aligning with the significant related work on which institutions are now embarking\, this webinar will begin a national conversation on how we understand the concept of an agile curriculum and what can be learned and shared across related projects and initiatives at national level. \nHCI Pillar 3 (Innovation and Agility) has resulted in 22 large-scale collaborative projects being funded across the higher education sector. Through projects recommended under this pillar\, ‘innovative methods of teaching and delivery will be promoted\, so that learners will benefit from improved quality and more engaging ways of learning on enterprise-focused courses’. HCI Pillar 3 emphasises agility and expresses the strategic aim of government to enable institutions ‘to anticipate\, understand and respond to emerging skills needs (…)\, to deliver new courses or adapt existing courses\, so that institutions can more quickly respond to emerging developments in technology and enterprise’. Pillar 3 projects will enable institutions ‘to provide lifelong learning and upskilling opportunities’. \nSpeakers for this webinar are: \nChair\, Dr Jim Murray (THEA and National Forum Board Member) \nProf Denise Rooney\, Virtual Laboratories in Higher Education \nProf Denise Rooney is Head of the Department of Chemistry and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science in Maynooth University. Prof. Rooney is Project Manager of the Virtual Laboratories in Higher Education HCI project. The initiative brings together five Higher Education Institutions: Athlone Institute of Technology\, Dublin City University\, Dundalk Institute of Technology and University College Cork with education technology providers\, to develop courses in which a virtual laboratory experience is complemented with a real laboratory experience. \nProf Ann Ledwith\, UL@Work \nProf Ann Wedwith is the Dean of Graduate and Professional Studies at UL with responsibility for growing UL’s postgraduate and professional programmes and improving the quality of the learning experience of these students. She leads the HCI funded UL@Work project that aims to build a flexible\, technology-enhanced learning platform to respond to digitisation and the future world of work in close collaboration with enterprise partners. \nDr Deirdre Lillis\, CONVENE: Transforming university-enterprise engagement for a co-created innovation and skills ecosystem in Dublin \nDr Deirdre Lillis is a member of the board of the Higher Education Authority\, the Senate of the National University of Ireland\, and Head of the School of Computer Science at TU Dublin\, City Campus. Dr Lillis is Project Lead in TU Dublin for CONVENE. She leads the Convene programme which is transforming university-enterprise engagement (www.convene.ieLed by TU Dublin\, in collaboration with the UCD Innovation Academy\, supported by 36 long-standing enterprise partners\, CONVENE will deliver a step-change in the skills and innovation needed to rebuild Irish enterprise for sustainability and resilience. \nDr Lynn Ramsey\, Multi-campus Micro-Credentials Project\, IUA \nDr Lynn Ramsey is Programme Lead for the Multi-campus Micro-Credentials Project led by the IUA. The project has four elements: Establishment of National Framework for Micro-credentials\, Creation of an effective and sustainable system of Enterprise Engagement for Micro-credentials\, Development of a digital portal for Multi-campus micro-credentials\, Development of Micro-credentials programmes in each of the universities. Universities partners are DCU\, TCD\, UCD\, MU\, UL\, NUIG\, and UCC. The project Steering Group includes all seven universities and NUI\, members of IUA and IBEC. In addition\, a 14-strong Enterprise Advisory Group will partner with the project group throughout and beyond the project. \nMr Gareth Lee\, Screen Skills Ireland (SSI) \nGareth manages Screen Skills Ireland (SSI)\, the Skills unit at Screen Ireland\, the agency responsible for the development of the Irish film\, television\, and animation industry. SSI supports the sector through a range of CPD courses\, funding schemes and other initiatives. Gareth also acts as an advisory board member for Animation Ireland. \nMr Kevin Marshall\, Microsoft Ireland \nKevin Marshall is the Head of Education\, Microsoft Ireland\, where he leads a team of dedicated professionals committed to enhance the quality of Teaching & Learning using technology. He has represented IBEC on several committees\, Teaching Council\, National Council Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) & Marino Institute of Education. He has a BA (Hons) Psychology\, University College Dublin\, an MSc Occupational Psychology\, University of Hull and a Ph.D.\, Educational Measurement & Research\, Boston College. \nThe National Forum is hosting two webinars focused on agile curricula as part of its 2021 national webinar series.
