SUMMARY:UNESCO ICT in Education Prize: Digital learning for greening education
DESCRIPTION:The UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education recognizes innovative approaches in leveraging new technologies to expand educational and lifelong learning opportunities for all\, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Goal 4 on education. \nEstablished in 2005 with the support of the Kingdom of Bahrain\, the Prize rewards individuals and organizations that are implementing outstanding projects and promoting the creative use of technologies to enhance learning\, teaching and overall educational performance in the digital age. An international Jury selects two best projects annually. Each prizewinner receives US$ 25\,000\, a medal and a diploma during a ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Every year the Prize has a specific theme\, which\, while being in line with UNESCO’s mandate and values\, advocates for responsible and ethical use of information and communication technologies. \nThe 2023 edition of the Prize has been launched. \nDeadline for application and nomination: 5 February 2024 \nTheme for 2023: Digital learning for greening education. \nThe 2023 edition of the UNESCO ICT in Education Prize aims to explore the synergies between digital learning and greening education\, two priority areas underscored during the Transforming Education Summit that took place in 2022. \nDigital learning\, with its potential to expand access and improve the quality of learning\, offers an avenue for the delivery of curricula and pedagogy to equip learners with the knowledge\, skills\, values and attitudes on climate change and promote sustainable development. SUMMARY:Assessment and Feedback in Placement Settings
DESCRIPTION:If you are involved in placement\, you may have wondered about how best to assess student performance when what’s involved is so different from typical academic activities where students attend and engage in lectures\, practicals\, tutorials\,etc. You may already have students reflecting on their work or may even be considering incorporating reflection for the first time. However\, there are often additional challenges associated with work placement in that students are remote from you as opposed to typical assessment where you can more easily engage with them. Have you ever wondered what the students’ views on assessment and feedback in work placement settings are? \nIn this seminar\, we will get some global\, national and local insights into the challenges and solutions to conducting assessment and providing feedback in a work placement setting. Firstly\, we will hear from Professor Rola Ajjawi about some of the challenges faced within the Australian setting together with thoughts on solutions that have worked. Secondly\, Dr. Geraldine O’Neill will discuss findings from a wide ranging study that she conducted with students\, host organisations and academics. SUMMARY:The John Kelly Award for UDL in Further & Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:The John Kelly Award for Universal Design in Further and Higher Education recognises the innovative practice of teaching staff in further and higher education engaging with the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to deliver a more inclusive learning experience for their students. The award aims to celebrate and promote the use of UDL in further education and higher education settings. \nThe awards are targeted at practitioners who have demonstrated their emergent commitment to UDL by undertaking the Digital Badge for Universal Design in Teaching & Learning and making exciting changes to their practice above and beyond their initial redesign. \nAfter a successful relaunch last year\, applications are now open for the Individual award category. To give our institutions and organisations the opportunity to further embed and develop UDL within their contexts\, the Collaborative award category will not be running this year but will return in 2024. \nThe awards are named after the late Professor John Kelly\, former Registrar of UCD and founding Chair of AHEAD in recognition of his pioneering work. John sadly passed away last year. DESCRIPTION:UNESCO is pleased to announce a Call for proposals on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for learning assessment. We are inviting organizations and individuals to showcase proven examples of effectively utilizing AI in different types of assessments\, including formative assessment\, summative assessment and high-stakes exams. This call aims to investigate the effectiveness of employing AI technologies in these assessment processes\, emphasizing ethical data usage and safeguarding human agency.Selected submissions will have the opportunity to present their work during UNESCO’s events\, including Digital Learning Week 2024 and other UNESCO conferences on AI and education. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in the implementation of Universal Design principles in Teaching & Learning to promote inclusivity ? This digital badge course\, hosted by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning\, will provide participants with a strong introduction to the Universal Design for Learning Framework and give them the opportunity to implement UDL approaches within the teaching activities they are currently undertaking. \nThis year we are teaming up with previously trained UDL badge facilitators to offer this course to 1500 participants simultaneously in FET and HE – the largest national roll out of UDL CPD ever undertaken in Ireland. SUMMARY:DCU Futures Conference: Integrating transversal skills in higher education
DESCRIPTION:Within the context of a rapidly changing world\, the increasing frequency of graduate career mobility\, and the rise of artificial intelligence\, a compelling rationale for the vital importance of transversal skills in higher education emerges. However\, questions regarding how to define\, prioritise\, develop\, evaluate and evidence such skills\, as well as the challenge of doing this within and across multiple disciplines\, are both complex and multifaceted. SUMMARY:Climbing the UDL Ladder: Building a Culture of Inclusion in Higher Education: "Overcoming Obstacles to Enhance and Sustain UDL Collaboration in Further and Higher Education"
DESCRIPTION:This year Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and Munster Technological University (MTU) have united to deliver a national UDL conference. The conference not only explores a whole institute approach to UDL but draws on learning and reflection from the HEA Path 4 Phase 1 Project in which both universities partnered on a work package considering leadership approaches to supporting UD.  With increased evidence available on the effectiveness of UDL creating a more inclusive environment across classrooms in Further & Higher Education\, this year we explore UDL from three key perspectives: Leaders\, academics\, and student services. \nConference Themes\nI. UDL in Leadership: Opportunities and challenges in supporting sustainable inclusive learning in further and higher education.  \nPresenters will guide conference participants through an examination of development processes (be it evidenced or aspirational) recognising the importance of supports for programme teams when designing programmes of study that considers the variability of the student body. By promoting the empowerment of staff and learners\, educational leaders can build cohesive and resilient learning environments that support sustainable inclusion. \nII. Furthering UDL in the classroom: An academic perspective on overcoming obstacles.  \nPresentations will address alternative pathways to success which remove potential barriers making learning goals attainable. This discourse will consider a positive learning environment with flexibility built from the onset be it based in evidence or recommended\, ensuring that flexibility\, accessibility and learner voice and choice are built into all approaches to teaching and learning. \nIII. Empowering the inclusive student experience: Student Services approaches.  \nRequested are presentations that showcase the promotion of removing barriers to education by student support services who are key players in this process. These presentations address a whole systems educational design as a driver in relation to student wellbeing. Innovative approaches to student support are most welcomed. \nConference Keynote Speaker – Dara Ryder  \nDara Ryder is Chief Executive Officer of AHEAD\, having previously managed AHEAD’s digital presence and developed a suite of online CPD programmes relating to inclusive practice in his role as Digital Media and eLearning Manager there. \nAfter graduating from Queens University in 2005\, Dara joined Dun Laoghaire College of Further Education as a lecturer\, where he became interested in inclusive education when working first-hand with students with disabilities in his classroom.  When the opportunity arose in 2008\, he joined AHEAD where he has been working ever since on creating inclusive environments in education and employment for people with disabilities. \nFor further information and to register for the event please see eventbrite link below. Please take a look at the details workshop three: \nA national UDL leader\, Lecturer Maureen Haran\, PhD(c)\, SFHEA\, manages the UDL Centre of Excellence at Atlantic Technological University. Maureen works with educational development teams to design and implement inclusive education practices at regional and national levels. She is the programme chair and Lecturer on the Post Graduate Certificate/ MA in UDL. Maureen has worked as an educator in both the Irish and American public education systems for over 18 years and has been an education reformer in working with educational development teams in both countries to design and implement inclusive education practices. She is undertaking her PhD in the field of education with the focus of implementing UDL through a cross campus approach. Maureen continues to work on inclusive education initiatives by leading the continuous professional development of academic staff and actively works on nationally funded projects on Universal Design for Learning implementation within the third level sector. \nShelley Brady holds a PhD from Ulster University. Her research explores the impact of inclusive teaching on student success and the student experience\, digital tools and student empowerment. She has worked in the area of disability since 2002. Throughout that time\, she has been a consultant\, associate fellow and lecturer across a wide range of settings and services. Shelley is currently the manager of the Disability Services in ATU Sligo. She is passionate about creating inclusive education for skill development and employment accessible to all.

Lisa works with academic and professional colleagues across the university to implement University for All – UCD’s whole-institution approach to student inclusion encompassing strategy and policy\, teaching\, learning and assessment\, student supports and services\, the built environment and technological infrastructure. Lisa has particular expertise in capacity building in the areas of Universal Design and Universal Design for Learning and works with colleagues across the Higher Education and Further Education and Training sector in Ireland through joint coordination of the Digital Badge for Universal Design in Teaching & Learning\, now with almost 3\,000 awardees in Ireland. Lisa has been lead editor on four collections of Universal Design for Learning Case Studies and co-wrote the Toolkit for Inclusive Higher Education Institutions. \n

Please take a look at the details of workshop one below: \nPresented by James Northridge (UCC) and Ellen McCabe (ATU) \nHaving Dyslexia and ADHD\, James Northridge understands the learning challenges that students face. After struggling throughout school due to his own learning challenges and dropping out of University\, a second chance came his way. He turned it around\, earning a first-class honours degree from University College Cork and a Masters in Disability Studies from University College Dublin. James is currently the Project Manager for UCC’s innovative “Inclusive UCC” project\, which is focused on making UCC a leader in Universal Design and Accessibility. \nDr Ellen McCabe has a background in instructional design and educational research\, with a specific interest in UDL and inclusive pedagogies. In her role as instructional designer\, she has supported staff across the ATU to utilise digital tools and resources in the creation of accessible learning environments. SUMMARY:Designing Learning Outcomes for Labs
DESCRIPTION:The ability to deliver effective laboratories in higher education came under sharp focus during the pandemic with the move to online teaching and learning. Prior to this move\, the department of Multidisciplinary Engineering Education in the University of Sheffield had re-examined their approach to the provision of labs across engineering programmes. As a result they developed a new model for lab delivery\, one that included rigorous development of learning outcomes for the labs\, with a focus on the cross disciplinary nature of practical engineering skills. During the pandemic they found that these changes facilitated a somewhat smoother transition of labs to the online mode than may otherwise have been expected. \nIn this workshop Prof Andrew Garrard and Dr Adam Funnell will outline their experiences of refocusing the labs within the engineering programmes in the University of Sheffield\, and what worked and what didn’t during the pandemic. As part of the workshop\, you will be guided through the process of developing effective learning outcomes for your labs that are situated within the wider context of the module and the associated programme. You will also be facilitated in the development of lab types that can be used both to achieve different types of learning outcomes and different modes of lab delivery.  \nThis event has been funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education \nClick here to register \nPlease note that this is an in-person event.

SUMMARY:Leadership for strategic change and development in Teaching & Learning in European Universities
DESCRIPTION:The Irish Universities Association is pleased to offer an online policy dialogue workshop which will focus of the issue of leadership for strategic change and development in teaching and learning in European universities. This event is organised in the framework of the EUA-led project “Leadership and Organisation for Learning and Teaching at European Universities” (LOTUS) in which IUA is a partner. The policy dialogue workshop will build on recent work undertaken in Ireland by the IUA’s Enhancing Digital Teaching and Learning project\, and the National Forum for the Enhancement of T&L’s Next Steps project. \nThe event will also present practices from other European countries and offer an overview of how the EU Recovery Fund is being used to strengthen teaching and learning in a range of member states in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. \nThe policy dialogue workshop will be of interest to institutional leaders with a responsibility in learning and teaching\, teachers\, education developers\, national and European policy leaders\, as well as representatives of stakeholder organisations active in learning and teaching. \nThe event will be hosted on the Zoom platform. DESCRIPTION:Virtual conference led by and aimed at students with disabilities\nAHEAD and the Union of Students in Ireland are happy to present the Power of Disability Conference 2022\, taking place January 20th and 21st. \nThis two day event will include discussions\, presentations and feedback sessions encouraging students with disabilities to be leaders on their own campuses and provide information for students and Students’ Union officers on the issues facing students with disabilities. \nDay 1 of the conference will focus on education. This day will have sessions sharing what it’s like to be a postgraduate student with a disability\, workshops on disclosing a disability and an interactive session looking at Universal Design for Learning. \nDay 2 of the event focuses on empowerment and constructive advocacy.
