SUMMARY:Assessing Design-Focused Learning
DESCRIPTION:***EVENT CANCELLED***\nPresenters:\n\nPaul Hermon\, Queen's University\, Belfast\n\nEngineering education\, especially the early years\, is often criticised for being abstract with a strong focus on maths and science. The Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) approach was developed as an alternative to the traditional engineering curriculum with a particular focus on the knowledge\, skills and attitudes required by practitioners. This collaborative approach was led by MIT\, in conjunction with Chalmers University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and now includes over 100 universities world-wide.\n\nThis sessions will explore the particular nature of engineering learning and its relationship to assessment practice in engineering education. The differences between traditional curricula and the CDIO curriculum will be highlighted. The presenters will explore in particular the different assessment practices that are utilised in both curricula and how they impact learning outcomes. A key aspect of the CDIO curriculum is its focus on design-implementation in all stages of the curriculum. The assessment processes commonly used to support this design-implementation activity will be discussed. Finally\, the nature of laboratory practice and how this is assessed will be discussed.\n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\n1.    Discuss a range of assessment approaches aligned with good practice in engineering education\n2.    Develop assessment strategies that support design-centred learning\n3.    Develop assessment approaches that enhance student learning in the laboratory
