SUMMARY:Informal in-class learning – to assess or not to assess?
DESCRIPTION:[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the Seminar Report[/dt_quote]\n\nPresenter:\n\nDr Alison Farrell Maynooth University and Professor Rachel Riedner\, George Washington University.\n\nCompetence\nin writing as a core skill is broadly identified as essential for\nhigher education graduates.  Support for student writing is experiencing\nunprecedented growth across the Irish higher education sector with\nseveral providers having established formal support for student writing\nthrough writing centres and similar initiatives.  A focus on in-class\nwriting can work very successfully to complement the writing support\nwork that is happened one-to-one and in small groups for students.\nIn-class informal writing for learning is key to Writing Across the\nCurriculum (WAC)\, Writing in the Disciplines (WID) and Writing Enriched\nCurriculum (WEC) where writing is not only an output of learning but\nitself a learning and enquiry tool.\n\nIn this seminar we will explore informal in-class writing-to-learning\nactivities against the backdrop of the WAC/WID/WEC literature and with\nreference to active learning pedagogies.  We will pay particular\nattention to how such approaches might be managed with large groups and\nwill consider to extent to which such activities could or should be\nassessed.\n\nThis session will be jointly facilitated by Dr Alison Farrell Maynooth\nUniversity and Professor Rachel Riedner\, George Washington University.\nDr Farrell is Teaching Development Officer in the Centre for Teaching\nand Learning\, Maynooth University  and Head of the University’s Writing\nCentre. She is a founding member and current co-chair of the Irish\nNetwork for the Enhancement of Writing (INEW).  She is also the founder\nof the Summer Writing Institute For Teachers (SWIFT).  Her research\ninterests include composition and enquiry\, literacy\, academic writing\nand collaboration.  Professor Riedner is Executive Director of the\nUniversity Writing Program at The George Washington University in\nWashington\, DC. During her tenure as WID Director\, her program was\nrecognized by US News and World Report as the one of the twenty writing\nprograms in the US that “best support student writing at all levels of\ninstruction and across the curriculum.” She has recently been accepted\ninto the Fulbright Specialist Program to do WID work internationally.\nRachel is the author of two books and multiple articles\, and she is the\nlead series editor with Lexington Books.\n\nThis seminar has been designed in consultation with the Irish Network\nfor the Enhancement of Writing (INEW) as part of a broader sectoral\napproach to supporting writing\, feedback and assessment in higher\neducation\n\n \n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nIn this session\, participants will have the opportunity to:\n\n•    explore the theoretical basis for using informal in-class learning activities\,\n•    experiment with a variety of informal in-class learning activities\,\n•    identify possible uses for in-class learning activities in their own teaching\,\n•    weigh up the advantages and disadvantages\, as suggested by evidence based practice\, of assessing informal in-class writing.

SUMMARY:Coordinating the Programme Team for Assessment and Feedback
DESCRIPTION:[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the Seminar Report[/dt_quote]\n\n \n\nPresenters:\n\nDr Mark Kerrigan\, Director of Learning and Teaching\, Anglia Ruskin University (mapmyprogramme.com)\nDr Alan Masson\, Blackboard Inc.\nDr Jen Harvey\, Head of Lifelong Learning\, Dublin Institute of Technology\nMr Ciaran O’Leary\, Head of Learning Development\, College of Sciences and Health\, Dublin Institute of Technology\n\n \n\nThe design of assessment and feedback across the modules and stages of a programme should look beyond the atomic assessment of individual modules and consider the overall objectives of the programme\, including programme learning outcomes and graduate attributes. This requires the active involvement of all members of the programme team in two roles. Firstly\, as programme designers\, the team members must made decisions about assessment and feedback during the design and validation of the programme. Secondly\, as lecturers\, the team members must make decisions about assessment and feedback while implementing the programme. In addition to requiring strong team leadership and the creation of a programme team culture\, this requires an appropriate environment and communication/collaboration medium for team members. Where active collaboration is taking place among programme teams\, there is evidence for the use of a range of collaborative tools\, including email\, Wikis\, cloud sharing resources (e.g. Dropbox)\, and online calendars (e.g. Google calendar). Often these tools are developed by the team leader as administrative tools\, and do not support the active analysis required by programme teams in order to make informed\, appropriate decisions about their programme design and implementation. This seminar will examine a number of tools currently available\, including the MapMyProgramme tool developed by oxford Brooks University\, collaborative tools available in the Blackboard platform\, and a prototype tool developed in Dublin Institute of Technology. Training will take place on the use of these tools\, and a large part of the seminar will be used for the participatory design of the next generation of tools to support programme teams in the design of their assessment and feedback activity.\nThe schedule for the seminar is as follows:\n\n9:30am: Welcome\n10:00am: Programme Mapping Demonstration and Exercise (MapMyProgramme)\n10:45am: Break and discussion\n11:00am: Experience of Programme Mapping in DIT (Jen Harvey\, Ciaran O’Leary and Programme Chairpersons)\n11:45am: Break and discussion\n12:00noon: Blackboard Collaboration tools for Programme Teams\n12:45pm: Lunch\n1:30pm: Participatory Design Workshop on Programme Team Collaboration Tools\n3:00pm: Summary\n3:30pm: Close\n\n \n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nTo create and visualise a mapping between assessment methods and programme outcomes\n\nTo analyse assessment and feedback in the context of the programme aims and objectives\n\nTo explore ways of coordinating programme teams during programme design and validation\, for the purpose of designing appropriate assessment and feedback methods across the programme.\n\nTo explore ways of coordinating programme teams during programme implementation\, for the purpose of implementing appropriate assessment and feedback methods across the programme.\n\nTo make appropriate choices on the use of technology for the design\, implementation and alignment of programme team activity for effective assessment across the programme.
