SUMMARY:The Use of Company and Community Projects to Enhance Assessment and Learning at Third Level
DESCRIPTION:[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the Seminar Report[/dt_quote]\n\n \n\nSeminar Overview\nHigher education has an important role to play in community-based research\, community-based learning\, volunteering and student-led engagement. The theme of engagement is a strategic priority for the HEA and there is an opportunity for third level students to work with a variety of community organisations and businesses to transfer knowledge\, while enhancing their own learning.\nThe seminar will review the benefits and challenges associated with the use of ‘real-world’ company and community projects as a method of assessment of learning at third level. It will consider the advantages of incorporating 'real world work' for enhanced learning and will explore the premise that this leads to increased student motivation\, improved ability to apply subject knowledge\, and the development of key graduate skills. It will also examine the concept of this type of assessment as learning in itself by allowing time for feedback and reflection in the post-assessment period.\nThe seminar will consider the management of the needs and expectations of all stakeholders involved in the assessment process and will consider the various methods of implementing this type of assessment methodology within the context and constraints of programme and module learning outcomes.\nFormat\nThe seminar will open with two presentations – one by Marie Moran\, IT Sligo\, and one by guest lecturer\, Dr Felicity Kelliher\, WIT. Felicity will present her research and experiences on the use of company-based projects with MBA students. These presentations will be followed by a variety of case studies from IT Sligo staff\, illustrating ‘engagement as assessment and learning’ from the perspective of the lecturer\, students and the organisations invloved. The seminar will conclude with a discussion and exchange of ideas that will be captured for dissemination.\nGuest Speaker (presenting using Adobe)\nDr Felicity Kelliher BB (WIT)\, MBA (UCD)\, PhD (QUB)\, Prince II. Felicity is a Senior Lecturer in Management and co-founder of the RIKON research group at Waterford Institute of Technology School of Business and an overseas Professor at Shanghai University\, China. A Fulbright scholar (2014-15)\, Felicity's research focuses on rural micro-firm managerial and network capability development\, and she was awarded the Knowledge Transfer Ireland Research to Business Impact award (2015) based on this work. She is currently a member of the Social Sciences Committee\, Royal Irish Academy and the Irish Research Council.\nVenue: C1006\, IT Sligo
