SUMMARY:Virtual Exchange / Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) – a practical tool for Education for Sustainable Development
DESCRIPTION:This webinar – led by TU Dublin and supported by the National Forum for Teaching and Learning – seeks to share practical insights into the use of Virtual Exchanges (VE)\, which are also known as Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). \nMany programmes seek to expand students’ world view and their awareness of global challenges\, however in-person exchanges are expensive and also have a negative impact on carbon emissions. Virtual Exchanges are a useful tool to foster global collaboration and intercultural understanding by connecting students and educators across borders\, promoting critical thinking\, empathy\, and shared problem-solving skills essential for advancing Education for Sustainable Development.  VE also offers an opportunity to link in a meaningful manner with students and Universities in the global south. \nIn this webinar\, academics with years of experience of using Virtual Exchanges will share their experience of organising and delivering virtual exchanges. \nThe webinar will be opened by Dr Brian Gormley\, Head of Sustainability Education in TU Dublin. \nSpeakers will include: \n\nProf Niamh Murphy and Dr Jenny O’Connor\, School of Health Sciences and School of Humanities\, SETU. Their COIL initiative is called TEACH CoLab and it is with the University of Washington in Seattle.\nGeorgina Lawlor\, School of Social Sciences\, Law and Education\, TU Dublin who operates a VE in the module: Advanced Community and Youth Development Practice in collaboration with Langara College\, Vancouver\nUna Carthy\, Faculty of Law and Humanities\, ATU\, who will report on a Virtual Exchange involving Universities in Germany and Spain.\nDr Ciaran O’Carroll\, School of Marketing and Entrepreneurship\, TU Dublin who has initiated a COIL project with An Najah University in the West Bank\, Palestine.\n\nThis initiative has been supported by the National Forum for Teaching and Learning and the SATLE fund.  This event will be recorded. \nYou can find more information and register for this webinar here:  https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/538d1dc4-6695-4a7e-932e-1dc25cbf3164@766317cb-e948-4e5f-8cec-dabc8e2fd5da

SUMMARY:Transform EDU Week Event 5: Developing Sustainability Literate Graduates - Adapting the UN Sulitest to Classroom and Aligning the Curriculum to the SDGs
DESCRIPTION:Universities have been mandated under SDG 4.7.1 to develop sustainability literature graduates. By sustainability literacy\, we refer to the knowledge\, skills\, and mindsets that help compel an individual to become deeply committed to building a sustainable future (Décamps\, 2017). \nIn this webinar we explore the transformative nature of education for sustainability and underpinning reflective pedagogy. We outline a whole-of-university approach to ensuring that it is embedded across the curricula. \nWe highlight approaches to measurement and evaluation and showcase the use of the UN’s sustainability literacy test or SULITEST www.sulitest.org with reflective practice in contextualising sustainability literacy across different disciplines. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Transform EDU Week Event 4: Contract Cheating – Valuing Teaching\, Learning and Education
DESCRIPTION:Contract cheating represents a challenge to the academic integrity of the educational system. Although one single solution to contract cheating does not exist\, the importance of an educative approach is recognised to ensure that students benefit from the learning opportunities offered to them. \nThis lead presentation for the Transform-EDU Project held during Valuing Ireland’s Teaching & Learning Week will review the characteristics of contract cheating\, including how educators can recognise breaches. The presentation will also consider opportunities available for educators to mitigate the risks of students succumbing to contract cheating\, including how this topic can be taught to students and how preventative measures can be put into place. Time will be available for questions and discussion. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Transform EDU Week Event 2 - Education for Citizenship and Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Our key note presentation will focus on the role of Higher Education in developing society though engagement with civic society (third sector). A key function of Technological Universities is to serve the community and public interest by (i) developing strong social and cultural links with the community in the region in which its campuses are located\, and (ii) fostering effective relationships with organisations involved in regional development – contributing to economic\, cultural\, social and scientific development of the State. This webinar will focus on how universities can contribute to inclusive\, sustainable and empowered communities by educating young people to participate actively in civil society. \nWe will also provide an overview of a new Active Citizenship module that aims to educate students in key concepts related to citizenship; encourage students to get actively involved in their communities to achieve personal development; and to further civic goals. The module is influenced by thought-leaders\, including Raghuram Rajan\, author of the Third Pillar\, The Revival of Community in a Polarised World\, Paul Collier John Kay\, authors of Greed is Dead: Politics after Individualism \nThe Transform EDU team will also provide an overview of findings from case-study research on civic engagement and community development in South Dublin. \nClick here to register
