SUMMARY:AHEAD Symposium 2016 - Taking Stock: UDL
DESCRIPTION:Disability and Access officers have for some time been the unofficial ambassadors for universal design for learning (UDL) in higher education in Ireland\, but is this enough to make it happen? Should the responsibility for UDL lie across the whole campus?\n\nWe want to pause and take stock by having a real and honest conversation about UDL with key professional staff\, including senior staff in disability/access\, career placement\, career guidance\, student support services\, libraries\, examinations and admissions.\nSo let’s talk about….\nWhat’s great about UDL\, what could be better & what are the obstacles?  What would you like to have to never do again & what restricts you doing what you really want to in your role? What shapes your opinions about disability in higher education?\n\nThis symposium will showcase thought provoking keynote addresses on teaching\, learning and assessment and mix that with stimulating interactive discussions. This year’s event includes an exciting exhibition showcasing inspirational contributions from the leaders of higher education in Ireland\, the champions for change on the ground and the learners who will shape Ireland’s future.\n\nFrom our work together at this event we will generate:\n\n\tAn action plan that acts a baseline for the implementation of UDL in the third level sector.\n\tA proposed framework for establishing a steering group for UDL on campus - addressing who should be involved.\n\tA proposed statement to be put forward to the next Bologna Policy Forum in 2018.\n\nThe ultimate result of the day will be a single vision statement that will be shared with college Presidents across the higher education sector.\n\nDownload the UDL Symposium Brochure

SUMMARY:Exploration of the Mental Models Which Inform An Understanding of Assessment
DESCRIPTION: \n\n[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the Seminar Report[/dt_quote]\n\nPresenter:\n\nRuairí Ó Céilleachair is a PDST Associate who works with the National Induction Programme for Teachers (NIPT). He is currently working on a pilot Staff Mentoring Programme for third level lecturers at Cork Institute of Technology and Waterford Institute of Technology. He sits on the steering committee of the teacher induction programme Droichead launched by the Teaching Council in 2013.\n\nRuairí has developed\, delivered and assessed teacher education and coach education programmes\, working with third level institutions in Ireland\, the Department of Education in Ireland\, the National Coaching and Training Centre at the University of Limerick and with sports governing bodies in Ireland\, UK and America. He has unique expertise in enabling organisations\, teams and individuals to identify and harness existing strengths and to take advantage of current pedagogical best practice in order to make teaching and learning more enjoyable\, productive and satisfying for both teachers and students.\n\nRuairí is a highly respected coach and mentor trainer.   He has played a major role in the development of the current national programme for teacher induction which involves mentoring\, observing and giving feedback to teachers as well as training fellow professionals toward the NIPT accredited Mentor Award.\n\nIn this seminar participants will be afforded the opportunity to explore and articulate the mental models which inform their understanding of assessment\, how assessment for\, of and as learning impacts on how students learn and how best to engage with them.\n\nAs part of this seminar participants will explore assessment methodologies and will examine the possibilities of incorporating some of them into their own teaching with a view to enhancing the learning that occurs.\n\nThe seminar will be a combination of lecture\, demonstration and workshop. The methodologies will focus on student engagement and motivation through use of assessment for\, as and of\, learning techniques to promote more effective teaching.\n\nEffective assessment is critical to establishing shared expectations between teacher and student. Ineffective assessment is often rooted in problems associated with fixed mindsets These expectations arise out of the people have and until these mental models are examined we cannot make lasting progress towards shared expectations.
