SUMMARY:TEL Week / Digital Skills in Action - Trinity College TEL Event
DESCRIPTION:Trinity College TEL Event – 10th March 2016\n\nThe eLearning team (TCD) will be hosting a 'Technology Enhanced Learning Day' on Thursday 10th March 2016.\n\n\n\nThe focus of the day is on reflection – “an activity that requires an individual to examine the manner in which they have responded to a given situation to increase awareness and one's assumptions and to enable better actions in the future” (Ruland and Ahern\, 2007). However\, students may struggle with the reflection process when asked to write reflective pieces in higher education. This day therefore examines the technologies and digital skills that can be used to support learners in the development of reflective practices.\n\nThe event will start with a welcome by the Academic Secretary followed by an overview by the use of reflection and technology in higher education. Then Kevin Kelly from Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering will discuss our case study involving using the website GoAnimate to convey the processes of reflection to students.\n\nThis will be followed by a session on ‘Reflection in Practice’ which will examine how video podcasts were used in conjunction with reflective journals to help develop reflective practices among students on the new MSc in Child\, Adoloscent and Family Mental Health. It will particularly focus on the use of reflective journals on Blackboard as part of the ‘Working with People Affected by Eating Disorders’ module.\n\nCamtasia (a tool for creating video podcasts) was used in the case study and on the MSc in Child\, Adoloscent and Family Mental Health to create video material\, interviews and podcasts. In the afternoon there will therefore be a workshop on using Camtasia to help staff and students to develop their digital skills in creating online videos.\n\n\n\nAll staff and students are welcome to attend all events\n \n\n10:15 - 10:30 Welcome by Patricia Callaghan (Academic Secretary) (Venue - 3-4 Foster Place)\n\n10:30 - 10:50 Presentation on 'Reflection for Learning - 2nd year students by Kevin O'Connor  (Venue - 3-4 Foster Place)\n\n10:50 - 11:30 Presentation on Case Study - 'Learning through Reflection with 2nd year Student Engineers' by Professor Kevin Kelly (Venue - 3-4 Foster Place)\n\n11:30 – 11:50 Coffee\n\n11:50 - 12:30 Show and Tell -  'Reflection in Practice - Using Technology to Enhance Clinical Development ' by Mark Monahan\, Jean Morrissey and Catherine Kane. (Venue - 3-4 Foster Place)\n\n12:30 - Lunch\n\n14:10 - 16:00 Workshop - 'Using Camtasia to Develop Video Teaching Resources' by Conor Rapple IT Services (TCD) (Venue - IT Services Training Room - see map below)\n \n\nCase Study\n\nReflection for Learning\n\n2nd year Engineering\n\nProfessor Kevin Kelly\n\nBooking Information

SUMMARY:TEL Week / Technology Enhanced Feedback Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement. (Hattie and Timperley 2007: 81)\n\nThis workshop will introduce contemporary perspectives on feedback and will discuss best practices approaches to feedback in Higher Education. Using case study examples from the Y1Feedback project as well as the wider literature\, it will then showcase a range of technology-supported feedback approaches that work\, and why.\n\nFacilitators: Lisa O’Regan and Morag Munro\n\nLisa O’Regan is eLearning Development Officer at Maynooth University and Project Lead for the Y1Feedback project.  Morag Munro is Learning Technologist on the Y1Feedback Project at Maynooth University.\n\nThe Y1Feedback Project (Supporting Transition: Enhancing Feedback in First Year Using Digital Technologies) is a collaborative initiative between Maynooth University\, Athlone Institute of Technology\, Dublin City University\, and Dundalk Institute of Technology. The project aims to enhance feedback dialogue in first year to support student transition and to leverage the potential for digital technologies to support transformation in feedback practices. This project is funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning.\n\nThe "What Works and Why?" partnership will run a  2015/16 TEL week that will be led by  Dublin City University and partners Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT).  This project will run from 7 to 11 March 2016.
