SUMMARY:Students as Researchers – Linking Teaching and Research Throughout the Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the Seminar Report[/dt_quote]\n\n \n\nPresenter:\n\nProfessor Stuart Hampton-Reeves\, Director of the Centre for Research Informed Teaching\, University of Central Lancaster\n\nThis seminar aims to present new and emerging practices for developing the link between discipline-based research and teaching throughout the curriculum and for providing innovative opportunities for undergraduate research. The role of dissemination of research-related activities through dedicated undergraduate research conferences and journals will be explored\, as will support mechanisms such as undergraduate research academies. On foot of feedback from the seminar funded last year on good practice in supervising students\, a consideration of alternatives to the traditional dissertation thesis will also be incorporated.\n\nAssessment for and of learning are key themes of this seminar and of the Student as Researcher pedagogy. The focus is on formative and summative experiences throughout the curriculum that are designed to develop learner capacity for enquiry and research. These incorporate diverse\, innovative and impactful assessment approaches that examine real world challenges\, that facilitate development of related graduate attributes and can be customised to a learner’s preferences and context. Because research presents opportunities for multidisciplinarity\, there is also the potential to develop holistic approaches between departments. Traditionally\, when the output of student research is submitted (e.g. a dissertation)\, it is usually read by two to three examiners and any summative feedback provided can be of limited value and may not be implemented. This is not a true reflection of research culture and has led to a demand for opportunities for disseminating undergraduate research.\n\nThe two hour session will be made up of two components; a keynote presentation by Professor Stuart Hampton-Reeves which will address the first two learning objectives\, followed by a one hour workshop that will focus on the third and fourth learning objectives.\nThis keynote and workshop aim to make educators aware of emerging good practice in developing the link between discipline-based research and teaching throughout the curriculum and to encourage them to reflect upon their current assessment and feedback practices in this area and how elements of the Student as Researcher pedagogy might be incorporated or further developed.\n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nParticipants in this workshop will;\n•    Reflect on examples of good practice for embedding research and research-like activities in the curriculum to facilitate students to become part of the academic community (Students as Researchers pedagogy)\n•    Consider alternatives to the traditional dissertation thesis as an assessment method\n•    Explore and discuss how formative and summative experiences designed to develop learner capacity for enquiry and research throughout the curriculum could be implemented in their own context\n•    Evaluate what changes could be implemented to ensure that students have opportunities to engage in research and enquiry and develop the relevant core skills

SUMMARY:Tablet Devices as a Peer and Self Assessment Tool
DESCRIPTION:[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the Seminar Report[/dt_quote]\nhttps://www.teachingandlearning.ie/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/UCD-Doctoral-Outcomes-Assessmentb.pdf\n\n \n\nPresenters:\n\nJane Moffatt and Robert Lowney\, Law Society of Ireland\nDonna Ó Doibhlin\, University College Cork\nTracey McKillen\, University of Limerick\n\nThe area of Mobile/Tablet/eBook provision is becoming increasingly important to the Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS) curriculum at the University of Limerick. The use of tablet devices can provide clinicians quick access to information such as medical calculators\, texts\, journals\, patient education materials and patient information systems (Perez et al\, 2013).  International studies show that tablet devices are becoming a valuable tool in both peer and self-assessment applications.\n\nFindings earlier this year from Ofcom show how tablets have spread quickly within families with children. It showed about 70% of five to 15-year-olds had access to a tablet at home. According to Bennett (2002) as students come to do the majority of their learning with technology\, asking them to express that learning in a medium different from the one in which they routinely work will become increasingly untenable.\n\nThis seminar aims to explore how tablet devices can be used as a means of formative assessment through the use of video tutorials and peer to peer feedback. International research on how formative assessment has been achieved through tablet devices will be discussed.\n\nThis seminar will include Irish practitioners with experiences in legal\, clinical and educational technology fields to show how they are developing tablet technologies as an educational tool. This work will provide insights into the direction we should take in the provision and use of tablet technologies\, to ensure that we reflect current best practice in education.\n\nReferences:\nPerez\, B.
