SUMMARY:Rethinking feedback practices in higher education: a peer review perspective
DESCRIPTION:[dt_quote type="blockquote" font_size="big" animation="none" background="plain"]Click here to view the seminar report[/dt_quote]\n\n \n\nPresenter:\n\nProf David Nicol - Emeritus Professor of Higher Education at the University of Strathclyde\, Visiting Professor of Higher Education at the University of Ulster and Adjunct Professor\, University of Swinburne\, Australia.\n\nProcesses around assessment and feedback are a key task of academic staff. Assessment determines what\, when and how students spend their study time while the feedback mechanisms in place have a major impact upon the resultant quality of their learning. This seminar will present some ideas that challenge traditional approaches to feedback in higher education and will also identify some new and emerging practices. Recent pedagogical research that explores the role of peer review in facilitating learners to generate their own feedback on their own work and to be more critical about it will be a main focus. This method applies a social constructivist approach with an emphasis on active involvement of students and on a feedback dialogue. Thus\, assessment as learning is a key theme of this seminar. This will incorporate peer and self review / formative assessment to improve learning and performance as well as the use of learning technology to facilitate anonymous provision of feedback. Another important aspect is the development of important skills such as the ability to make evaluative judgements based on criteria\, written communication\, critical thinking\, reflection and self-regulation.\nThe two hour session will be made up of two components; a keynote presentation by Professor David Nicol which will address the first three learning objectives\, followed by a one hour workshop on how to implement peer review and peer feedback processes that will focus on the fourth and fifth learning objectives.\nThis keynote and workshop aim to make educators aware of emerging good practice in assessment as learning and to encourage them to reflect upon their current assessment and feedback practice and how elements of peer review processes might be incorporated.\n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nParticipants in this seminar will;\n•    Reflect on the conditions that are required for feedback to enhance learning\n•    Consider evidence to date on the benefits to learners of conducting anonymous peer reviews (producing feedback themselves) and compare this to research outputs on the effect of receiving peer feedback.\n•    Recognise the importance of dialogue within assessment and feedback processes\n•    Explore and discuss how peer review and feedback could be implemented in their own context to allow students to improve their critical thinking skills and to develop as independent and self-regulated learners\n•    Evaluate what changes could be implemented to ensure that students develop the capacity to provide quality feedback\, which is a fundamental graduate skill
