Enabling Institutional Capability for Formative Assessment Strategies through the Learning Management System

Learning Management Systems that are provided to lecturers and students in Higher Education can facilitate a variety of approaches to assessment. In order to align assessment activities to the desired outcomes, a strategic approach to the design of both the curriculum and the learning environment is required (Knight, 2000). That way, a learning environment conducive to assessment as and for learning across the enterprise is possible and far more likely.
There is a growing demand for enterprise wide interactive tools that allow students and lecturers connect online. Providing access to spaces where interaction can happen online through video, audio and text based chat enhances the learning environment quite positively. Virtual classrooms are increasingly being used to facilitate various forms of assessment and feedback and assist students’ deeper understanding and reflective practices.
This seminar will consider the assessment opportunities created by providing a virtual classroom, BigBlueButton, enterprise wide throughout the learning management system. It will highlight how interacting with an ‘online’ guest lecturer can improve the students’ overall understanding of the topics being presented. Additionally, it will outline how the Virtual Classroom can be used to provide richer feedback to students and groups using the tool.
